A rare possibility of decision was used in this final. Since the Chinese Yang Xiuli and the Cuban Yalennis Castillo were not rated after five minutes, the final was decided in favor of the more active fighter. The jury proclaimed Yang to be the more aggressive judoka, so that although Cuba remained silver in this year's Olympic judo competitions for the third time, they have to wait even longer for their first gold. The German bronze winner from 2004 Heide Wollert lost two fights and thus placed seventh.
