Amar Benikhlef

Amar Benikhlef ( Arabic عمار بن خليف, DMG ʿAmmār b. Ḫulaif ; * January 11, 1982 ) is a former Algerian judoka who won an Olympic silver medal in 2008.

Athletic career

The 1.86 m tall Benikhlef began his career in light middleweight, the weight class up to 81 kilograms. In 2004 he won the title at the African Championships in Tunis. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens he was eliminated in his second fight against the German Florian Wanner .

From 2006 Benikhlef fought mainly in the middleweight division, the weight class up to 90 kilograms. At the African Championships in 2006 he won a bronze medal. The following year he reached the final at the Africa Games 2007 in Algiers, but lost there against the Egyptian Hesham Mesbah . In 2008 Benikhlef and Mesbah met in the final of the African Championships in Agadir, this time Benikhlef won.

At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 Amar Benikhlef defeated the Moroccan Mohamed El Assri with Yuko in his first fight , in the round of 16 he won against the Spaniard David Alarza after 3:54 minutes. Benikhlef won the quarter-finals against the Swiss Sergei Aschwanden with a coca rating, in the semifinals he beat the French Yves-Matthieu Dafreville after 4:44 minutes. In the final, the Georgian Irakli Zirekidze won through a penalty for Benikhlef.

In 2009 Benikhlef won a bronze medal in the light heavyweight division at the Mediterranean Games . In 2010 and 2011 he won the middleweight division at the African Championships. In 2012 and 2013, Benikhlef won a bronze medal at the African Championships.
