Mediterranean Games
The Mediterranean Games are a major sporting event in which the nations bordering the Mediterranean take part. The Comité international des Jeux méditerranéens is responsible for the games .
The event goes back to an idea of the Egyptian Muhammed Taher Pascha . The then President of the National Olympic Committee of Egypt proposed it to be held at the Olympic Games in 1948 .
The first Mediterranean Games were held in 1951 and always took place in the year before the Olympic Games . Since 1993 they have been held in the following year. The 17th Mediterranean Games were held in Turkey from June 20-30, 2013 , and the 18th edition was held in Spain in 2018.

- Although Israel is located on the Mediterranean Sea, it is not allowed to participate in the games; the Arab participants threatened to boycott the event for political reasons.
- Countries that do not have a Mediterranean coast and still participate are Portugal , Andorra , San Marino , North Macedonia , Kosovo and Serbia .
