The 2013 Mediterranean Games ( officially : XVII Mediterranean Games, Turkish XVII Akdeniz Oyunları) took place from June 20 to 30, 2013 in Mersin , Turkey . The opening and closing ceremonies were held in the Mersin Arena .

All 24 members of the CIJM took part in the games. The program included competitions in 27 sports.

canditature

The cities of Rijeka (Croatia), Mersin (Turkey) as well as Volos and Larisa (Greece) had applied for the organization with a joint candidacy. On October 27, 2007, Greece was awarded the contract. Due to the country's economic crisis, he was stripped of his orientation on January 28, 2011. In a vote carried out online by the ICMG, Mersin was chosen as the host.

Protests and ticket allocation

In the run-up to the Mediterranean Games, the protests in Turkey in 2013 also saw protests in Mersin against the Turkish Prime Minister Erdoğan, who appeared at the opening ceremony. Police intervened and six people were injured and eight were arrested.

It was also criticized that tickets were given preference to party supporters of the ruling AKP.
