French Roast is a French computer-animated short film directed by Fabrice Joubert in 2008.

action

A man is sitting in a Parisian café, reading the newspaper and ordering a coffee . In between, a beggar appears who collects paper in front of the café and asks the man for a donation, but the man refuses. When the man tries to pay for his coffee, he realizes that he has forgotten his wallet . In his desperation, he orders more cups of coffee throughout the day and the bill keeps getting longer.

A little old woman has sat down at the next table. When the beggar appears again, she hands him a note from a thick wad of banknotes. As the woman falls asleep again and again, the desperate man tries to steal from her, but cannot open her bag. A policeman appears and hangs up a wanted poster in the café showing a man. In the evening, when the policeman fell asleep drunk in the man's arms, the man opened the old woman's bag and found a mask in it that resembled the phantom image. He is mistaken for the wanted man by the waiter and chaos ensues when the hastily awakened policeman lurches around awkwardly and the beggar appears in the café, slips and his collected papers fly around the room.

The old woman comes, takes the mask softly reproachfully, leaves the café and drives off in a bus. The beggar eagerly collects his paper and the waiter presents the man with the latest coffee bill. When the man collapses in tears over the bill, the beggar suddenly places the banknote on the bill that he had received from the old woman. The waiter takes it and even gives the man change. The beggar leaves the café and the man remains amazed.

production

Joubert developed the idea for French Roast while at DreamWorks in Los Angeles ; he cited Paris nostalgia during his time in LA as one of the reasons for the action taking place in a Parisian café. The style and humor of the film are modeled on the works of Jacques Tati , while the color concept draws on films such as Billy Wilder's The Girl Irma la Douce and Stanley Donens Charade .

The film was made in summer 2007. First, Joubert worked for three months with students from the École Georges Méliès in Paris, and then for a year with 65 artists and technicians from the Bibo Film production company in Montreuil .

French Roast premiered on October 30, 2008 at the Voix d'Étoiles Festival.

Awards

French Roast was nominated for an Oscar in the category “ Best Animated Short Film ” in 2010 , but could not prevail against Logorama .

Fabrice Joubert was awarded a prize for the best animated film at the Córdoba International Animation Festival (ANIMA).
