Urs Stammbach (born October 26, 1939 ) is a Swiss mathematician who deals with algebra and homological algebra .

Stammbach studied at the ETH Zurich , where he obtained his diploma in 1964 and received his doctorate in 1966 under Beno Eckmann (and Heinz Hopf ) ( applications of the homology theory of groups on central series and on invariants of presentations , Mathematische Zeitschrift, Volume 94, 1966, p 155). As a post-doctoral student , he was at Cornell University from 1967 , where he was visiting assistant professor from 1968 to 1969. He was then a professor at the ETH Zurich, from 1979 as a full professor.

Stammbach deals with homological algebra especially with applications to group theory ( homology and cohomology of groups). He also deals with the history of mathematics, especially in Switzerland.

In 1990/91 he was President of the Swiss Mathematical Society .
