Frei studied mathematics, physics and languages in Zurich . He received his doctorate in 1968 under Bartel Leendert van der Waerden in Zurich with a thesis on geometry (contributions to axiomatic content theory). From 1968 he was an instructor at the University of Notre Dame and from 1970 he was at the University of Laval in Québec , where he was a professor since 1971. He has now retired and lives in Hombrechtikon .

Frei mainly deals with number theory and the history of mathematics, especially the 19th and 20th centuries (such as the biography of Helmut Hasse ), the history of number theory and Swiss mathematics. He is a member of the Euler Commission .
