occupation

Logorama is a 16-minute animated short film from 2009 produced by French production companies H5 and Nicolas Schmerkin's Autour de Minuit . The film shows events in a stylized Los Angeles in which the characters as well as objects and backgrounds consist exclusively of logos . In total, more than 2,500 logos and mascots of new and old brands are used in the film. A literal advertising landscape is created.

Logorama received the "Kodak Discovery Award for Best Short Film" at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival and the Oscar in the " Best Animated Short Film " category at the 2010 Academy Awards.

content

The film begins with a panoramic view of the all-logo city of Los Angeles. At the beginning, the main characters, including several Pringles and Michelin men , the “ Esso Girl”, “Big Boy” (the mascot of a restaurant chain) and the Haribo mascot, are introduced. These go to everyday activities such as refueling, eating or driving a car.

The action accelerates when the fugitive Ronald McDonald appears and takes hostages during the confrontation with the police, portrayed by the Michelin Man . There is a shooting and a chase. The plot changes to the genre of the disaster film , when first an earthquake, then an oil spill and finally a flood destroy the city and everything, including the W of Hollywood , sink into oil. Only two characters, the " Esso Girl" and the "Big Boy", are left alone on an island.

In the last shot, the camera moves out and past several planets, which are also represented by logos, in order to finally show the entire Milky Way as the Milky Way logo.

Leitmotif

In various interviews, the H5 members explain some of their ideas and intentions behind their short film Logorama . This shows to what extent logos are embedded in our daily existence. He not only uses existing logos and mascots graphically, but also uses stereotypical Hollywood acts in terms of content.

The film presents the viewer with an over-marketed brand world consisting only of logos and trademarks, which is destroyed by a series of natural disasters, such as earthquakes and tidal waves, and ultimately goes down.

The intention of the directors is to first of all inspire the viewer with the plot known from Hollywood blockbusters and to tie them to the film. Only then should the viewer become aware that the entire film was only created from logos. The aim of the H5 members is to encourage people to think through their subliminal message, but to allow the viewer to decide whether or not to understand the film as a criticism of branded consumption.
