The Mersin Arena (also known as Mersin Olimpiyat Stadı ) is a football stadium in the Yenişehir district of the Turkish city of Mersin on the Mediterranean coast . The football club Mersin İdman Yurdu , from the top division Süper Lig , moved in 2014 from Tevfik Sırrı Gür Stadı from 1951 to the sports facility with 25,497 seats.

history

The city of Mersin competed alongside the Greek cities of Volos and Larisa and Rijeka ( Croatia ) to host the 2013 Mediterranean Games . On October 27, 2007, the two Greek applicants were awarded the contract. Due to the Greek sovereign debt crisis , the event was withdrawn from the Comité international des Jeux méditerranéens (CIJM) for Volos and Larisa . In a new election on February 23, 2011, Mersin received the most votes and became the new host of the multisport event.

The Mersin Arena was built for the opening and closing ceremonies of the games. Since there were no competitions in the arena, the pitch was only laid in September after the games. According to initial plans, the arena should have 30,000 seats and be called Mersin Olimpiyat Stadı. Construction started in February 2012, but could not be fully completed by the start of the Mediterranean Games on June 20, 2013. Construction did not end until March 2014. The stadium has 25,497 seats. These are made up of 20,667 regular seats, the 914 seats in the 54 VIP - boxes on 4,812 , 3,773 VIP seats and 180 seats in the official gallery together. The arena has an area of 55,000 m².

The two-story tiers on the main stand and the back straight are covered with blue plastic seats. Seats in red are installed in the back of the stands. The stadium roof is covered with a membrane on a steel frame structure . The same applies to the outer facade, which is covered with the fabric. The roof line of the oval venue slopes down towards the back-end stands. There are 17 elevators and 34 stairs available. The stadium area includes 1,295 car parking spaces and 46 bus parking spaces.

The arena’s first soccer game was played on March 23, 2014. Mersin İdman Yurdu and Gaziantep Büyükşehir Belediyespor drew 0-0 in front of 21,000 spectators in the game of the second Turkish division . The stadium celebrated its Süper Lig premiere on August 30, 2014 when the home side played against Beşiktaş Istanbul . Mersin lost 1-0 with a goal from Cenk Tosun in the 43rd minute.

The pitch was not in good shape during the game. The natural green was already covered with deep holes in the first half. The second home game of the season on matchday three against Çaykur Rizespor was relocated to Adana in the 5 Ocak Fatih Terim Stadı due to the poor pitch . During this time, the time was used to create a playable lawn in Mersin. The third home game against Bursaspor on the fifth day of the match could again be played in the Mersin Arena.
