criticism

Meeting with Erdoğan in May 2018

Shortly before the early Turkish presidential and parliamentary elections in June 2018, Cenk Tosun, Mesut Özil and İlkay Gündoğan met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in London on May 13th . All three presented Erdoğan with one of their jerseys and posed for the media at the handover. After the photos were published, the three football players were sharply criticized. The public handover of the jersey was understood as "tasteless campaign aid for Erdoğan" and described as the "opposite of successful integration". The German national player Emre Can , who also played in England, had rejected Erdoğan's invitation.

Support for the Turkish military offensive in northern Syria

In October 2019 Tosun posted a team photo of the Turkish national team on the Instagram platform , which was taken as part of the European Championship qualifying game against Albania . It showed players who gave the military salute in support of the Turkish army , which had just launched a military offensive in northern Syria . Something similar happened again in the qualifying game against France on October 14, 2019, in which the six Turkish players Tosun, Mahmut Tekdemir , İrfan Can Kahveci , Umut Meraş , Mert Günok and Merih Demiral took part.

Private

Tosun is married to Ece Akgürbüz, the couple has one son.
