He then came to an agreement with the Turkish first division club Gençlerbirliği Ankara , where he most recently wore the captain's armband and won the 2001 cup. The capital city agreed with Galatasaray on a loan deal until summer 2005 with an option to buy. After the loan, Ankaraspor's purchase option was not drawn and so he returned to Galatasaray Istanbul.

In the 2006/2007 season he scored 24 goals in 39 competitive games - 2,897 minutes (including 32 games in the regular formation).

In the 2007/2008 season he was again champion with Galatasaray, but scored only 11 goals in 30 league games.

For the 2009/2010 season he moved to Eskişehirspor on a free transfer . Karan ended his active football career at the end of the 2010/11 season. Eskişehirspor then hired him as a sports director. In July 2011 he was arrested on suspicion of match fixing.
