Metin Oktay (born February 2, 1936 in İzmir , † September 13, 1991 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish football player .

With 217 goals, the "Taçsız Kral" (king without a crown) is the fourth top scorer in the Süper Lig . As a player from Galatasaray Istanbul (1955 to 1961 and 1962 to 1969), Oktay won two Turkish championships and the Turkish Cup four times . In the course of his career, Oktay was the top scorer in the Süper Lig six times.

He is described by Galatasaray supporters as well as many other football fans in Turkey as the best striker in the history of Turkish football and belongs to the circle of players who have shaped the club history of Galatasaray.

Education and family

Metin Oktay was the ninth child in the Oktay family. Five of his eight older siblings died prematurely. During his school days he attended İzmir İnönü Lisesi and continued his school education at the Mithatpaşa Erkek Sanat Enstitüsü in the interior design department.

Career as a player

Junior period

Oktay began his career in 1952 in Izmir in the youth of Damlacıkspor . In 1953, the young striker came to an agreement with Adnan Süvari , who was a player- coach at Yün Mensucat , and moved there. Oktay was also appointed to the youth team of Turkey and aroused the interest of Beşiktaş Istanbul and Adalet . There were talks between the player and the club, but both clubs did not reach an agreement with Oktay. A year later, Oktay moved to İzmirspor and signed his first professional contract.

İzmirspor

Metin Oktay played in the İzmirspor jersey during the 1954/55 season in the İzmir Profesyonel Ligi. He won the city championship with his teammates, he himself scored 17 goals in 18 league games and was the top scorer. Gündüz Kılıç , then head coach of Galatasaray Istanbul, watched Oktay and invited him to a trial session. On May 7, 1955, the striker came in the yellow and red jersey for the first time . Galatasaray played against Beşiktaş at the Ataturk Kupası . On July 1, 1955, Oktay signed a five-year contract with Galatasaray Istanbul.

His first game as a player from Galatasaray Istanbul took place on August 28, 1955 in the friendly against Beyoğluspor , which went out 3-0 in favor of the yellow-reds . In that game, Oktay scored his first goal for Galatasaray. Two months later followed his first official game in the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi against Istanbulspor . Gala won the match 3-0, Metin Oktay scored the third goal. The 1955/56 season ended Oktay with his teammates in 1st place and became city champions. He himself scored 17 goals in 19 games and was the top scorer. With the championship title, Galatasaray became the first Turkish team to qualify for the European Cup .

In the preliminary round Galatasaray met Dinamo Bucharest . The Turks lost the first leg in Romania 3-1, Metin Oktay scored the first European cup goal in Turkish football history in the 77th minute of the game. In the second leg Gala won 2-1 with goals from Kadri Aytaç and Oktay, but retired early. On the 19th matchday of the season 1956/57 Metin Oktay scored four goals in a game in a 6-1 home win against Kasımpaşa Istanbul for the first time in his career. With 17 goals, the striker was İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi top scorer for the second time at the end of the season.

In the next season Galatasaray Istanbul played in the Federasyon Kupası in the 2nd round of the preliminary round against Anadolu . Metin Oktay scored five times in this encounter. The game ended 10-0 for the yellow-reds . In the Federasyon Kupası Metin Oktay and Lefter Küçükandonyadis ( Fenerbahçe Istanbul striker ) scored ten goals each, which was the best performance. For the third year in a row, Oktay was the top scorer of the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi, and he was also the city champion for the second time with Galatasaray.

The İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi was held for the last time in the 1958/59 season. Metin Oktay scored 22 goals and became the top scorer. Metin Oktay scored 77 goals in 66 league games in four seasons of the İstanbul Profesyonel Ligi. In 1959 the Turkish Football Association introduced the national championship Millî Lig . In the first league game in the club's history, Galatasaray won 2-0 against Ankara Demirspor, both goals came from Metin Oktay. The league was then divided into two groups (red and white) with eight teams each. The teams in first place in the table in both groups qualified for the final. There was a return leg in the final. Galatasaray finished first in the Red group. First in the White group and thus opponent in the championship finals became city rivals Fenerbahçe. The first leg at Mithatpaşa Stadyumu started for Oktay in the 13th minute of the game with a dismissal. The decision by Yugoslav referee Marković led to an argument on the field between the two teams. Marković withdrew his decision and Oktay was allowed to continue playing.

In the 39th minute of play Metin Oktay ran a long ball. He tried to run past two opponents with the ball, was pushed more and more to the left, so that the angle to the goal was quite acute when he had free space to shoot. He pulled with his left foot and hit the long corner with an oblique shot, where the ball hit the corner and flew through the net. Galatasaray won the first leg 1-0. Fenerbahçe won the second leg 4-0 and became the first Turkish champions. Metin Oktay became the first top scorer in the newly introduced league with eleven goals.

The season 1959/60 ended for Gala in 3rd place in the table. Oktay was the Millî Lig top scorer for the second time, scoring 33 goals in 33 league games. Metin Oktay was arrested on September 15, 1960. The striker had finished his military service eight days earlier than allowed and was sentenced to 45 days in prison as a result. He was sacked on October 28 and scored two goals a day later against Fatih Karagümrük SK . Metin Oktay scored four goals in a 5-0 win over Fenerbahçe. He was after Celal İbrahim and Zeki Rıza Sporel the third player to achieve this achievement. Oktay ended the championship with Galatasaray as runner-up behind Fenerbahçe Istanbul. With 36 goals, the yellow-red striker was the top scorer for the third time in a row.

US Palermo

On July 10, 1961 Metin Oktay moved to Italy for first division promoted US Palermo and signed a two-year contract. His head coach was Leandro Remondini , they both knew each other from their time together at Galatasaray Istanbul ( 1959/60 ). Return to Galatasaray

Before the start of the 1962/63 season, Metin Oktay returned to Galatasaray and signed a two-year contract on July 25. As reigning champions, the yellow-reds took part in the European Cup and met in the preliminary round at Dinamo Bucharest. In the first leg Galatasaray drew 1-1 away, Metin Oktay took the lead in the 53rd minute. The Turks won the second leg 3-0 and moved on to one round. Oktay scored 1-0 with a penalty. In the first round Galatasaray met Polonia Bytom . In the first leg Galatasaray won 4-1, Oktay scored three of the four goals. Despite a 1-0 defeat, Gala advanced one round. In the quarter-finals, the European Cup came to an end against eventual cup winners AC Milan .

In the Turkish league, however, there was a new league system this season. 22 teams were divided into two groups. The first six teams in both groups qualified for the final round. This increased the number of game days and Oktay came to 26 league appearances and scored 38 goals. As in previous years, he was the top scorer. The goal record of 38 goals was broken 25 years later by Tanju Çolak . Çolak also scored 39 goals in the Galatasaray shirt. Oktay became Turkish champions and cup winners for the first time at the end of the 1962/63 season.

The championship could not be won again in the season 1963/64, but the Turkish Cup. For the first time in his career, during his career in Turkey, Oktay failed to finish the season as a top scorer. Güven Önüt succeeded with 19 goals . A season later, the national cup and the title of best scorer followed again. In his final season as an active player, Metin Oktay was the last time champion and top scorer.

In the national team

Oktay made his first appearance in the red and white jersey in the U-18 national team against Belgium on April 11, 1954. The Turkish juniors won 4-0 in Leverkusen . The first international match and first goal for the national team took place on December 18, 1955 against Portugal . Metin Oktay played 36 caps for Turkey in 13 years and scored 19 goals. With this number of goals, he is together with Nihat Kahveci and Cemil Turan the fifth best player in the Turkish national team.

Coaching career

Shortly after retiring, he became assistant coach to Tomislav Kaloperović . Kaloperović was sacked by Galatasaray after the 1969/70 season and Oktay also had to leave the club. Both worked together again for Bursaspor in 1972 . After the Yugoslav head coach resigned after a 1-0 defeat against Giresunspor , Oktay was promoted to head coach. The season ended Bursaspor in 10th place. On December 4, 1973, Oktay and Bursaspor parted ways.

After his short coaching career, Metin Oktay worked successively for the newspapers Tercüman , Güneş and Milliyet .

Private life

In January 1959, Metin Oktay married Oya Sarı in Izmir. In the same year the couple separated. The reason was that Oktay turned down an offer from İzmirspor and stayed with Galatasaray. His second marriage followed with Servet Kardıçalı. Octay became a father for the first time on February 9, 1966, and his newborn daughter, named Zeynep, died a few hours after the birth. The couple later adopted a boy named Rıfat Halil Pala.

On September 13, 1991, Metin Oktay had an accident at around 4:15 a.m. at the exit of the Bosphorus Bridge . The former striker later died in Haydarpaşa Numune Hospital from internal bleeding. A mourning service was held at Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu and in front of the Milliyet newspaper building . In memory of the striker, the training ground of Galatasaray Istanbul in Florya (Istanbul) was named after him and has been called Metin Oktay Tesisleri since Florya .
