The Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu (also Ali Sami Yen Stadı , German Ali-Sami-Yen Stadium ) was the soccer stadium of the Turkish soccer club Galatasaray Istanbul used until 2011 .
history
The stadium was named after Ali Sami Yen , the club's founder, and had a capacity of 23,785 seats. It was located in the European part of Istanbul in the Şişli district in the Mecidiyeköy district. The stadium was also called Cehennem ( Turkish hell ) by the fans ; this name comes from the special acoustics in the sold out stadium and the sight when the fans cheered on the team with Bengali fires . A famous quote by longtime captain of AC Milan , Paolo Maldini , after a 2: 3 defeat in a UEFA Champions League game against Galatasaray on November 3, 1999: "No one can tell me that will be only 20,000 ... ! "
In 1940 the old Taksim Stadium was demolished and the clubs in the Beyoğlu district had to look for new playgrounds. Galatasaray decided on a new building, construction work began in 1943. Because of the Second World War , only small grandstands could initially be built. The provisional stadium was opened in 1945, but the construction work could not be completed until 1964. The completed stadium was inaugurated on December 14, 1964 with a friendly international match between Turkey and Bulgaria . The floodlight system was installed in 1965 and renewed in 1993.
The last game was played on January 11, 2011 at Ali Sami Yen Stadyumu. Galatasaray Istanbul won the Turkish Cup against Beypazarı Şekerspor 3-1 (0-1). On January 15, 2011, Galatasaray and Ajax Amsterdam (0-0) played the opening game in the new home of the Türk Telekom Arena .
The venue was demolished in April 2011. Serious construction defects were discovered during the demolition work. Too little steel was used in the concrete. In the new Türk Telekom Arena it is 250 kg per m 3 ; in the old venue it was only 57 kg per m 3 . As a result, the stadium was in constant danger of collapsing and could have collapsed at any time during a game.
