history

Ataturk Museum in Central Şişli

Until 1800, Şişli lay in the open country, used for hunting, agriculture and as the final resting place of the townspeople. A number of cemeteries still exist today. In the last years of the Ottoman Empire and in the first years of the republic (late 19th / early 20th century), Şişli developed into a district of the middle class. French culture was the most influential at the time and the great avenues were given a European style. Large stone buildings with high storeys and iron balconies in Art Nouveau style and small lifts within the stairways are characteristic. The trading middle class consisted of Jews , Greeks , Armenians and Turks. Most of the houses were built in Beyoğlu District after a major fire in 1870. Istanbul's Armenians still live in the Kurtuluş district of Şişli today . The area became attractive for merchant families from the Levant . But families from the collapsed Ottoman Empire also moved to Şişli from Greece and the Balkans . In the late 19th century, Şişli was one of the first districts to receive tram lines, electricity and gas supply. The Orphanage of Darülaceze, the Armenian Private School Pangaltı , the Surp Agop Hospital and the large Şişli Etfal Hospital were built during this period, as were well-known French schools such as Saint-Michel and Notre Dame de Sion.

After the establishment of the Turkish Republic in the 1920s, ever larger buildings were erected along the wide boulevards, such as Halaskargazi Caddesi, the main street running through the middle of Şişli, with its small arcades and shops below residential and office complexes. Even in the Republican era, the quarter was inhabited by the middle class, by merchants, but also by writers and poets. Theaters, cafes and other cultural institutions were built in Şişli. The Hilton Hotel was built in the 1950s. Many other hotels followed.

The immigration of job seekers from Anatolia began in the 1950s . In most cases, they built temporary dwellings on unclaimed or state-owned land, known as gecekondus . Many of the immigrants settled in the northern part of Şişli, especially in the Mecidiyeköy district . Now that the richer residents of central Şişli have moved north, the large buildings along the boulevards are increasingly being used by offices, banks and shopping centers. Since the 1970s, most of the older buildings have been replaced with newer multi-purpose buildings. The side streets retained their residential character.

The district today

Today Şişli was one of the most attractive residential, business and shopping areas in Istanbul, but there are great social differences within the district. Many working-class families and students live in the north of Şişli, and a large part of this area is now also a residential area for the middle class . As in most parts of Istanbul, the increased number of people living and working in the blocks is changing the existing infrastructure; There is a great lack of parking spaces and traffic comes to a standstill during rush hour. A variety of shops, cafes, pubs and other amenities are available to the residents of Şişli. The second largest shopping center in Europe, Cevahir Alışveriş Merkezi, is also located in the city district . In addition, Şişli’s central location to other important parts of Istanbul is attractive. Only in the extreme north is there still a gecekondu with the Kuştepe district.

politics

The mayor of Şişli was the nationally known Mustafa Sarıgül ( CHP ). Under the slogan Smiling Happy Şişli , he initiated a campaign that was intended to give the former glamorous quarter a new image, just like the luxurious Nişantaşı shopping district in the south of the city district already has today. He is a member of the Galatasaray football club . The deputy mayor was Vasken Barın , who has an Armenian background. Hayri Inönü has been the new mayor of Şişli since 2014.

Vice Mayor Cemil Candas was gunned down by strangers in his office after the attempted coup in Turkey in 2016 .
