Şile (Turkish; Greek Χηλή Chilí ) is a Turkish bathing resort on the Black Sea about 65 km from Istanbul on the Asian side of the Bosporus . Şile means marjoram in Turkish . However, it is believed to be a corruption of an originally Greek name.

history

The first traces of settlement in the place date from the Stone Age . The place was mentioned by Xenophon in his anabasis . The place has had a lighthouse since Ottoman times . Since the 1980s, holiday resorts and hotels have been expanded.

Economy and Transport

Şile can be reached by car from Ümraniye and Çekmeköy or by bus from Harem from lines 139 and 139A, from Tepeüstü from line 139T. Lines 139D and 139U also travel from Şile to the surrounding area. The city is a popular tourist destination because of its proximity to Istanbul and the neighboring sandy beaches. An attraction for tourists is the Şile Festival, which takes place every summer and where numerous artistic performances are shown.

Textile manufacturing has a long tradition in the city. The cotton fabric from Şile, which is very light, delicate and translucent, is made on hand looms.

The private Işık Üniversitesi campus has been located in Şile since 2003 . The largest clinic Şiles is a state institution. All areas of medicine are covered. Various private polyclinics are also available.
