Arnavutköy is a district of İstanbul in the west of the city, i.e. on the European side. It also forms a district ( Turkish İlçe ) in the province of İstanbul , as the city is its own province, and has 225,670 inhabitants (as of 2014).
Geographical location
Arnavutköy is located in the geographical center of the European side of Istanbul and is bounded in the north by the Black Sea , in the south is the Sazlıdere reservoir (Turkish Sazlıdere Baraj Gölü ), which supplies Istanbul with water. It has extensive green areas that serve as the city's recreational area. In İstanbul there is another place called Arnavutköy; a neighborhood in the Beşiktaş district also bears this name.
history
Arnavutköy ( Arnavut Turkish for Albanians, köy Turkish for village) had a predominantly Greek population in 1923. In this respect, recent history is shaped by the population exchange after 1923, which was regulated in the Treaty of Lausanne . The Greeks, who previously lived in large numbers in Arnavutköy, left Turkey. The main road to Edirne plays another important role. It was an important link to Western Europe during the Ottoman Empire and thus determined the development of Arnavutköy. The name of the place comes from this time.
Arnavutköy is divided into districts (Turkish Mahalle ): Adnan Menderes, Ataturk, Anadolu, Bahşayış, Boğazköy, Boğazköy Ataturk, Bollcua, Cami, Çilingir, Deliklikaya, Dursunköy, Fatih, Hadımkicöy, İstasy, Haraçretıy, Haraçsllam , Karaburun , Karlıbayır, Mareşal Fevzi Çakmak, Mavigöl, Mehmet Akif Ersoy, Merkez, Nakkaş, Nenehatun, Ömerli, Sazlıbosna, Taşoluk, Yavuzselim, Yeşilbayır, Zafer.
