Bakırköy ( Turkish for copper village , Armenian : Բաքըրքյոյ) is a district of the Turkish city of Istanbul and also a district of the Istanbul province .
geography
The district is located on the European side of Istanbul, on the coast of the Marmara Sea . The city's largest airport, Ataturk Airport ( Ataturk Havalimanı ), is located in the district of Yeşilköy .
Bakırköy has 221,594 inhabitants (as of 2014).
history
In ancient times, the suburb of Hebdomon of the city of Constantinople was located in the place of today's Bakırköy .
Until 1925 the district was called Makriköy (from Greek Μακροχώρι Makrohori , "long village").

Bakırköy has a train station on the İstanbul Sirkeci – Swilengrad railway, which was served by the S-Bahn from İstanbul Sirkeci to Halkalı . Operations here have been suspended since 2013 and the line is being renovated.
Sports
Bakırköyspor is the best known and most successful football club in the area and was active in Turkish professional football from 1984 to 2007. His most successful time he had club in the years 1990-1993, in which the club in the top Turkish league, the Süper Lig , was active. Especially in its first first division season, the 1990/91 season , the team finished the league in 6th place in the table and became the surprise team of the season. Since the summer of 2008, the club played in the Istanbul amateur leagues.
