founding

The club was founded in Bakırköy in 1949 as a sports club. In addition to football, the club also had the basketball , volleyball and tennis departments .

Entry into professional football

After Turkish professional football had been reduced from three to just two professional leagues in the summer of 1980, the third highest professional football league, the 3rd Lig , now known as TFF 2nd Lig , was reintroduced in 1984 on the directive of then President Turgut Özal . In addition, it was announced that after certain requirements and conditions have been met, you can apply for participation in the league. In order to promote urban development, several city notables tried to meet the requirements. For example, a free space was temporarily converted into a football stadium. After the conditions were met, the Turkish Football Association confirmed participation. So Bakırköyspor took part in the 1984/85 season in the re-introduced 3rd Lig. Already in the first season the club reached the championship of the 3rd Lig and rose for the first time in the club's history to the second highest Turkish league, then known as the 2nd Lig .
