Piotr Nowak (born July 5, 1964 in Pabianice ) is a former Polish football player and today's coach .
Player career
Nowak started playing football in his hometown when he was 15. He played for GKS Bełchatów , Zawisza Bydgoszcz , Motor Lublin and in the first Polish division for Widzew Łódź . In 1990 he went to the Turkish first division to Bakırköyspor . He came to 1. FC Dynamo Dresden via BSC Young Boys in Switzerland in early September 1993, shortly after his last assignment for the Bernese .
He spent his most successful time in Germany between 1995 and 1998 at TSV 1860 Munich . During his time in Munich he was voted the best playmaker in the Bundesliga in 1996 and was also named Footballer of the Year in Poland . During this time he was the captain of the Polish national team . He made a total of 24 international matches and scored three goals for Poland.
In 1998 he moved to the US professional league for Chicago Fire , with whom he became a major league soccer champion and won the US Open Cup twice. In 2002 he moved to New England Revolution , where he ended his career without having played a game.
Coaching career
Nowak began his coaching career at the Washington club DC United and won the MLS Cup in 2004 . In December 2006, he resigned as a coach in order to work from January 2007 as assistant coach of the US national team and coach of the US U-23 national team. He fulfilled these tasks until May 2009.
From 2010 to June 2012 Nowak coached the newcomer Philadelphia Union in the MLS. From 2014 he was responsible for the national team of Antigua and Barbuda. During his tenure, the national team improved from 140th to 70th in the FIFA world rankings.
In January 2016 he succeeded the German coach Thomas von Heesen at Lechia Gdańsk . Under the direction of Nowak Lechia Gdańsk was the best team in the second half of the season and improved from 12th to 5th place in the table.
Others
For his successes, he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland by Poland's President Kwasniewski in 2005 .
