Willie Donachie (born October 5, 1951 in Glasgow ) is a former Scottish football player on the position of defender who began as a coach after his active career .
Player career
Manchester City
Donachie began his professional career in the 1969/70 season at Manchester City FC , represented in the top English division , where he was part of the regular formation from the 1971/72 season .
In his early days as a reserve player, he won the European Cup Winners' Cup and the League Cup with the Citizens in 1970 and, as a regular player, the Charity Shield in 1972 and the League Cup again in 1976. In the following season 1976/77 he was with the Citizens runner-up with only one point behind Liverpool FC , who won the European Cup for the first time in the same season .
National team
During his time at Manchester City Donachie also made the leap to the Scottish national team , for which he completed a total of 35 missions between 1972 and 1978. The highlight of his career in the national team were his participation in the World Cup in 1974 and 1978 . While he was not used in 1974 and had to be content with the role of the spectator in the disappointing opening game against Peru (1: 3) in 1978, he played the other two preliminary round matches against Iran (1: 1) and the Netherlands (3: 2) ), but could not prevent the Scots from again losing the World Cup in the preliminary round.
Further stations
In the spring of 1980 Donachie moved to the Portland Timbers playing in the North American Soccer League , with whom he stayed until their withdrawal from the league in late 1982 and in the meantime completed a brief stint at Norwich City .
In late 1982 Donachie returned to England , where he played in the 1982/83 season for the second division Burnley FC and had to accept relegation at the end of the season. He initially stayed with Burnley and played in the 1983/84 season in the third division, which the club completed with a disappointing twelfth place for a relegated team.
Before the 1984/85 season , Donachie moved to the second division Oldham Athletic , with whom he narrowly missed promotion to the football club in the 1986/87 season. Under the coach Joe Royle Donachie acted as a player- coach and managed in his farewell season 1990/91 as an active player to win the second division championship and the long-awaited promotion to the football club.
Coaching career
After his active career, Donachie continued to work for Oldham as assistant coach to Royle, who he followed to Everton FC in 1995 .
In 1998 Donachie worked again as assistant to Joe Royle, this time at his former club Manchester City. After Royle's departure, Donachie stayed a few months as assistant to Kevin Keegan and moved to Sheffield Wednesday in November 2001 , where he was assistant to Terry Yorath . In October 2002, his long-time mentor Royle brought him to the Ipswich Town he was in charge of , where Donachie served again as his assistant for almost four years.
In 2006 he moved to Millwall FC , where he initially worked as an assistant to Nigel Spackman and after his departure himself received a contract as head coach, which he held until October 2007. He then worked as the head coach of the national soccer team of Antigua and Barbuda , in the youth division of Newcastle United and currently (November 2014) as an assistant coach at Hartlepool United .
In 2018, Donachie became the national coach of Montserrat's team , which after a three-year break was back in competitive matches as part of qualifying for the CONCACAF Nations League . At the beginning they lost 2-1 to El Salvador in stoppage time.
