history

The idea for a CONCACAF Nations League was presented for the first time at the XXXII. Ordinary CONCACAF Congress in Oranjestad , Aruba on April 8, 2016. The Nations League was decided on November 16, 2017. Victor Montagliani , President of CONCACAF, explained that the purpose of the competition was to give CONCACAF national teams the opportunity to participate in regular international events To give games. Some teams would play fewer than 10 games in four years. To support the development of the sport in these countries, more competitive games are needed.

As part of the Nations League , CONCACAF introduced a new ranking list for national teams called the CONCACAF Ranking Index . It includes all results of the teams from 1990 onwards, but gives higher weighting to the results of the last four years.

The dates that were previously intended for friendly matches will be used for the event. So there should be no conflicts with the World Cup or the Gold Cup . In the run-up to the first edition of the CONCACAF Nations League , there was a qualification tournament from September 2018 to March 2019. The group stage will then take place from September to November 2019. In June 2020, the Final Four will be played to determine the winner.

A qualification tournament was held for the first time the competition was held. The six participants in the fifth qualifying round for the 2018 World Cup were automatically placed in League A without qualification. The Guatemalan national football team did not take part in the qualification due to a suspension by FIFA and was automatically assigned to League C after the suspension was lifted. The remaining 34 member associations had to go through a qualification. The top 6 teams also qualified for League A, the next 16 for League B and the remaining 12 for League C.

The Nations League is divided into three leagues (A, B and C). Each league is divided into four groups, each with three or four national teams. League A consists of four groups of three, League B of four groups of four and League C of one group of four and three groups of three. The teams compete against each other in a home and return game , so that four or six games have to be played. The leagues are played for promotion and relegation, with League A being the highest and League C being the lowest. The eight group last in leagues A and B are relegated, the eight group winners in leagues B and C. The four group winners in League A then determine the winner in a final round. There are two semi-finals and a final there.

Furthermore, the 16 best national teams qualify for the following Gold Cup .
