Oranjestad is the capital of the Caribbean island of Aruba, which is part of the Dutch kingdom . With 28,294 inhabitants (2010) it is also the largest city on the island.
history
Fort Zoutman was founded by the Dutch as early as 1796 . Shortly afterwards, the first houses in this area were built. Oranjestad was named after the ruling royal family of the Netherlands ( Dutch Oranje ).
Since then, Oranjestad has been the capital of Aruba. In 1986, Oranjestad gained a little more importance, as it was now the capital of one of the three equal parts of the Dutch Kingdom (alongside the Netherlands and the Netherlands Antilles ).
Infrastructure
Oranjestad is connected to many states in the Caribbean , the United States and Europe via Queen Beatrix International Airport . There is also a port that many cruise ships head for. Since 2013 there has been a tram operated according to the hydrail principle without overhead lines, which connects the port with the center. Since 1979 the bus routes from Arubus have connected Oranjestad with other places all over the island.
The currently only hospital on the island, the Horacio Oduber Hospitaal , is located in the West district of Oranjestad.

Worth seeing in Oranjestad are Fort Zoutman , the Museo Numismático , the Willem III. Turm , the Schoonerhafen with duty-free shops and opportunities to do sports and the Wilhelminastraat shopping street .

The city is also known for its unique architecture (mainly in the old town). You can tell at first glance the Dutch influence in the colorful, richly decorated, airy and tall buildings.
