The Arubus NV is the largest public transport companies in the passenger transport on the island of Aruba . The company, based in Oranjestad, is 100% publicly owned by Aruba.

history

On September 28, 1979, the first public transport company was formed with the approval of the Aruba government. The company, then known as the West End Transportation Company , began transporting people with a fleet of three buses. On October 1, 1979, the government of Aruba then founded Arubus NV as its own transport company with 14 Volvo buses.

The company serves the main areas of the island on a daily basis. The vehicle fleet is also used for public school bus transport and is rented out by private charter companies. Over the past 35 years, Arubus has expanded its fleet from an initial 14 buses to a total of 42 new buses. In total, Arubus operates 18 lines and 10 school bus routes. On average, Arubus transports around 2.7 million people annually (excluding school bus traffic).

tram

On February 19, 2013, Arubus put the first tram line into operation. The Aruba tram , officially called "Arutram", runs every eight and a half minutes between the cruise terminal on the outskirts of Oranjestad and the city center. The three open rail vehicles that use hydrogen as an energy source are operated according to the hydrail principle. The energy required is generated from solar and wind power. The tram does not need overhead lines. The historic looking vehicles were built by TIG / m LLC based in Chatsworth , USA. The grooved rails laid in the asphalt were manufactured by the Duisburg company TSTG.
