Reno Steba

Reno Steba (born June 15, 1960 in Dakota near Oranjestad (Aruba) ) is a Dutch jazz bassist.

The son of the trumpeter Oscar Steba plays bass from the age of twelve . He came to jazz music through his studies at the Aruba Music Academy. He studied with the trumpeter and arranger Franklin Granadillo and the Brazilian pianist Armando Lorenzini . He then performed with his own band ( Earth Sensation ) and worked as a studio musician.

In 1984 he took part in the Martinique VI Carrefour Mondial de la Guitare . Here he met Jaco Pastorius , with whom he took lessons and with whom he performed together. He won a special jury award , in the same year the Motito y Rufo Wever Award as Musician of the Year in Aruba , and the following year as Arranger of the Year.

In 1985 Steba moved to the Netherlands. Here he became a member of the group DI Formation , with whom he had performances with musicians such as Lee Touwers , Corrie Konings , Oscar Harris and Lou Prins . He also worked with Latin jazz groups such as Tribal Fusion , Bacan , Seduction , the Ana Beck Quartet and Batida and with Caribbean groups such as the Willy Latino Showband , Caribbean Fantasy , Unisono and Siembra . As a sideman he worked with the jazz musicians Cindy Blackman , Ray Appleton , Alex Acuña and Armando Peraza .

Steba has been the bass player for the Sticks & Strings trio since 1992 . He also leads several bands of his own: Ropes for Tails , with which he took part in the Aruba Jazz & Latin Music Festival in 1991 and 1993 , II Faces , with which he recorded his debut album Secret Passage in 2000 , and F JAP III . Since 1992 he has been teaching bass guitar at the Amsterdam Music School.
