The Dr. Horacio E. Oduber Hospitaal (short: HOH from Horacio Oduber Hospitaal ) is the only hospital on the island of Aruba .

The hospital is located in the West district of the capital Oranjestad . The hospital was originally a Catholic hospital, but is now open to patients of all denominations. The hospital, which opened in 1977, is operated by the Stichting Ziekenverpleging Aruba. The Foundation's Board of Trustees oversees and organizes the general affairs of the hospital.

history

The doctor Horacio Eulogio Oduber (1862–1935) was the first doctor on the island, he ran a small practice in his private house Quinta del Carmen in the village of Bubali. Often the doctor was paid only in kind or was given food for his horse. Doctor Oduber was a doctor at a time that now seems almost primitive. There was no electricity or running water, no telephone, or motorized traffic on the island, and medical science was still in its infancy. Many people died of infections, viruses or diseases that were not yet known at the time. According to an estimate, around 8,000 people lived on the island in 1910. They were mostly farm workers with little financial means.

Since there was no hospital at the time, the doctor took the patients into his home. Indeed, it could be said that the doctor's house on Wilhelminastraat in Aruba was the first hospital. The necessary operations, including amputations, were only carried out by administering plenty of rum due to the lack of anesthetics such as opium or anesthetics. As a result of the gold mining in Aruba , the population increased rapidly from 1824 and Horacio Oduber's infirmary became too small.

In 1920 the first San Pedro de Verona hospital was founded by Catholic nuns (Dominicanesses), in which Horacio Oduber was still active until his death in 1935.

Facility

The current hospital was put into operation at the end of 1976 and the official opening took place in January 1977. It was named after the doctor Horacio Oduber. The modern hospital with 320 beds and around 800 employees also has a helicopter landing pad to deliver patients by police or naval helicopters.
