Qualification for | Women's soccer World Cup |
The AFC Asian Cup Women ( English AFC Women's Asian Cup ) is the Asian Continental Championship in women's football and is played since 1975th This makes the Asian Cup the oldest continental championship in women's football. The host of the tournament is the Asian Football Confederation . The tournaments were organized from 1975 to 1983 by the Asian Ladies' Football Confederation, an organization independent of the Asian Football Confederation, which was only accepted by the AFC in 1986. The tournaments during this period are therefore not taken into account by the AFC and FIFA.
The tournament took place at irregular intervals every two or three years. Until 2003 there were no qualifying rounds, all registered teams took part directly in the final tournament. As of 2006, the competition will be called the AFC Women's Asian Cup and will be held every two years. The competition was previously called the AFC Women's Championship . The record winner is the PR China , which has won the tournament eight times so far.
Every four years the tournament also serves as an Asian qualification for the women's soccer world championship. Asia is currently entitled to five starting places there.
