The New Zealand women's national soccer team represents New Zealand in international women's soccer . The national team is subordinate to the New Zealand Football Association and was coached by John Herdman until September 2011. He was succeeded by Tony Readings , who was an assistant coach under Herdman . After Reading's resignation, technical director Andreas Heraf and U-20 trainer Gareth Turnbull took over the coaching position on November 3, 2017. In December 2017, Heraf was hired as head coach and Turnbull as kotrainer for 2 years. Heraf resigned at the end of July 2018. At the end of October 2018 Scottish Tom Sermanni became the new national coach.

In 1975 the New Zealand Women's Soccer Association was founded as a merger of the Auckland and Canterbury regional associations . The Wellington Association , which at the time had violent disagreements with the Auckland Association, was provisionally admitted as an associate member. The merger was a response to the invitation from the Asian association to the first Asian women's soccer championship. The New Zealand selection was promptly the tournament winner. In 1983, the women's soccer Oceania Championship was played for the first time . New Zealand won this tournament too. In 1991 the Swanz repeated their success and qualified for the first women's soccer world championship . In the following years the selection was overshadowed by Australia . After the Australian Association switched to the Asian Association in 2005, New Zealand has no competition in Oceania and won without conceding a goal in 2010 and with an 11-0 record result in the final and became the sole record holder with four titles (as of 2018: six). Nevertheless, New Zealand has to live with the disadvantage that due to its geographical location you cannot play very often against top international teams.

The nickname "Swanz" is based on a play on words. In 1991 the New Zealand Women's Football Association changed its name to the Women's Soccer Association of New Zealand, or WSANZ for short. If you swap the first two letters you get “Swanz” (swans). The New Zealand Federation wants the selection to be known as the New Zealand women's national squad. However, this designation has not caught on. They are featured on the association's website as "Football Ferns".

In the official FIFA rankings, the New Zealanders range between positions 16 and 24; in 2018 they were ranked 19th.

World Championship

New Zealand took part in the world championship finals three times, never surviving the preliminary round. In 2011, New Zealand first set Denmark's negative record of seven consecutive lost games in the first round game, and expanded it to 8 consecutive defeats in the second game. It was only in the third preliminary round game that the first point was won in 2011, but it was only secured in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Wendi Henderson , the only player to take part in 1991 and 2007, was the first New Zealand player to make six World Cup appearances. Meanwhile, six other players have six World Cup appearances. No New Zealand player has scored more than one goal at World Cups. In 2011, New Zealand was the only team eliminated in the preliminary round to score at least one goal in each of the three group games.
