When the groups were drawn, New Zealand was not seeded and was drawn to group A with hosts Canada. China and World Cup newcomers Netherlands were drawn as further opponents. According to the positions in the FIFA world rankings before the World Cup, this was the most balanced group: New Zealand was in 17th place before the World Cup, the Canadians in 8th, China in 16 and the Netherlands in 12; Group cut = 13.25.

New Zealand lost only the first game against the newcomer to the World Cup, the Netherlands, against which the balance is now balanced with two wins, a draw (with one defeat on penalties ) and defeats. Against the Canadians now trained by former New Zealand coach John Herdman , against whom there was only one win with three draws and six defeats in 10 games before, a goalless draw followed in the second group game. With a win against China, New Zealand could have qualified for the round of 16. Against the Chinese, who won only three times in 16 games but lost 13 times, there was now the first draw. This increased the number of games without a win at World Championships to 15 and New Zealand was eliminated from the bottom of the group. The New Zealanders took the lead, but had to accept an equalizer 13 minutes later with a questionable hand penalty. In the second half, China even took the lead. The New Zealanders could only equalize through Hannah Wilkinson , who was the first New Zealand player to score a goal in two World Cup finals and thus became New Zealand's record goalscorer.
