Thailand took part in the World Cup finals for the first time and met the two ex-world champions Germany and Norway . The team qualified fifth in the 2014 Asian Cup and benefited on the one hand from the increase in the field of participants to 24 teams - which gave the Asians two more starting places - and on the other hand from North Korea's disqualification for doping violations at the last World Cup . Thailand is the only one of the four Asian Cup qualifiers to qualify for the World Cup finals. The other four Asian starting places had secured teams that were directly qualified for the Asian Cup.

Games at the World Cup
Venues |
When the groups were drawn, Thailand was not seeded and group B with European champions Germany was drawn.
In addition, the team meets Norway and Ivory Coast , which are also taking part for the first time. There was only one game against Norway that was lost 4-0 at the 1988 Women's FIFA Invitational Tournament. Thailand has never played against Germany or the Ivory Coast. Before the draw, Thailand had only played in Asia and Australia, then in February for the first time in Europe against the Netherlands.
According to the positions in the FIFA world rankings before the World Cup, this was the second weakest (group average = 27) and the most unbalanced group. On the one hand, the Thais in 29th place had to play against world number one Germany and on the other hand against the worst placed World Cup participant Ivory Coast (67th place). The third group opponent, former world champions Norway, was in 11th place in the FIFA world rankings. This was also the first group in which two ex-world champions met in the group stage at a women's World Cup.
Thailand started against the physically superior Norwegians with a few quick counterattacks, but was too harmless in the end and ultimately lost 4-0. Against the Ivory Coast they fell behind in the fourth minute through Ange N'Guessan , who at 1.40 m is even a little smaller than the not very tall Thai women. In the 26th minute Orathai Srimanee was able to equalize with the first World Cup goal for Thailand and in stoppage time of the first half scored the opening goal for the Thai women, which was also recognized by the referee thanks to the goal-line technique . In the second half, Thanatta Chawong used a confusion in the Ivorian penalty area two minutes after being substituted on to increase it to 3-1. It's the fastest goal after a substitution at the Women's World Cup. At the end of the day, when the strength waned, the physically more robust Ivorians were able to come up to 2: 3 and almost equalize. With luck and skill, however, the Asians defended their first World Cup victory. In the game against European champions Germany they only had one chance to score, had to defend themselves against non-stop attacks by the Germans, but defended a 0: 1 until half-time. After the break, Germany was able to score three more goals. Thailand was only the fifth best group third of all groups with three points and was eliminated.
