Football Women's World Cup 2015 / Colombia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article discusses the Colombian national football team of the women in the soccer World Cup Women 2015 in Canada . Colombia took part in the finals for the second time and scored a WN goal for the first time. With a surprise win against World Cup favorites France, the team even qualified for the round of 16, but failed there because of the USA. Colombia qualified for the 2014 World Cup as the unbeaten runner-up to the Sudamericano Femenino in 2014 .

qualification

For Colombia, the route to Canada led through the Sudamericano Femenino 2014 in Ecuador , in which all CONMEBOL members took part without prior qualifications. This was played over two group phases. In the first round five teams met each other, of which the two best qualified for the second round. Colombia did not lose a game, but only finished second with two draws in the second round, which directly qualifies the team for the World Cup.

When the groups were drawn, Colombia was not seeded and was drawn into Group F with France. England and Mexico were drawn as further opponents. There was only one game against France that was lost 1-0 in the preliminary round of the last Olympic Games in 2012 . There were six games against Mexico before the World Cup, one of which ended in a draw and five were lost. Colombia played a game in England at the Olympics , but had never played against England.

In the first group game against Mexico, the Colombians fell behind after 36 minutes and it looked like they would lose to Mexico for a long time. In the 82nd minute Daniela Montoya then scored the first World Cup goal for Colombia - four years earlier they hadn't scored - the equalizer and the final score. Against unimaginative French women, they surprisingly won the second group game and were thus leaders. When it came to the last group game, due to the other groups that had previously been concluded, it was already certain that Colombia had reached the knockout round at least as third party regardless of the outcome of the game. Against England they then conceded two goals in the first half, the equalization in stoppage time made Lady Andrade the Colombian top scorer, but did nothing to change the fact that Colombia finished third.

As the best third in the group, they will meet the USA in the round of 16 on June 22, 2015 in Edmonton and had to travel to the West to do so. There were only two games against the USA before, both were lost 3-0 - in the group games of the last World Cup and Olympic Games. Against the USA, the Colombians had to do without goalkeeper Sandra Sepúlveda , who received the second yellow card in the last group game . Substitute goalkeeper Catalina Pérez did well after an initial uncertainty, but was then given a red card in the 50th minute after an emergency brake in the penalty area . The substitute Stefany Castano had then initially fortunate that world record holder Abby Wambach scored the due penalty off target, shortly after she was a shot from Alex Morgan but divert attention into his own net. She was also powerless on the second penalty shot by Carli Lloyd . Then she stayed without another goal. Since their teammates did not succeed in putting the US goal in jeopardy and did not score a goal against the USA this time, there was no surprise again.
