history

In 1868, Jesup Wakeman Scott, a Toledo newspaper editor, published a pamphlet entitled Toledo: Future Great City of the World . In it he explained his idea that the center of world trade would shift further and further west and would have reached Toledo by 1900. In preparation for this development he donated 160 acres of land for a university and on October 12, 1872, the Toledo University of Arts and Trades was founded. Scott died in 1874, a year before the university opened in a former church in downtown Toledo. The facility quickly ran into financial difficulties and had to close in 1878. On January 8, 1884, the remaining assets were transferred to the city of Toledo and the school was reopened under municipal ownership as the Toledo Manual Training School . The curriculum lasted three years and was aimed at students who were at least 13 years old. They received both scientific and manual instruction.
