He played for the Rockets in 37 games, of which he won 26, leading them to a Conference Championship and two Division titles. In 2003 and 2004 he was able to complete more than 70% of his passes, making him the first quarterback in Division IA history to do so in consecutive seasons. His career completion rate of 68.2% was also a Division IA record.

An anniversary team was elected for the 100th anniversary of the Rockets. Gradkowski ended up as the second quarterback in second place.

NFL

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Gradkowski was selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2006 NFL Draft as the 194th player in the sixth round. On July 24, 2006, he signed his contract. During the offseason he was able to convince Head Coach Jon Gruden . After quarterback Chris Simms injured himself on the third game day, Gradkowski took over the role of starting quarterback and led the Buccaneers to a 4:12 record. On October 15, 2006 Gradkowski was able to bring the up to then winless Buccaneers against the Cincinnati Bengals to their first victory and thus also achieve their first own career victory. Gradkowski set a record for throwing the most passes in NFL history (200) before throwing the second interception of the career. Altogether Gradkowski threw in his rookie season for 1,661 yards, new touchdowns and nine interceptions . In 2007 he was the third quarterback for the Buccaneers. He was used in four games in which he completed 13 of 24 passes and threw for 130 yards, no touchdown and an interception. He was released on May 30, 2008.

St. Louis Rams

After his release, the St. Louis Rams signed him for their training camp, but released the quarterback on August 31.

Cleveland Browns

On December 10, 2008 Gradkowski was signed by the Cleveland Browns as a backup behind Ken Dorsey . He received a two-year contract. After Dorsey injured a starting quarterback for the Browns for the third time in the 2008 season , Gradkowski was appointed starting quarterback for the final game of the season against the Pittsburgh Steelers . In the 0:31 defeat Gradkowski threw three interceptions and only completed 33% of his passes, giving him a quarterback rating of 2.8 for the game and thus the entire season. He was released on February 9, 2009.

Oakland Raiders

On February 10, 2009, the Oakland Raiders signed Gradkowski. Here he was the backup behind JaMarcus Russell . After he was put on the bench because of poor performance, Gradkowski became a starter. He was able to win two of his three completed starts before sustaining a knee injury in a 13:34 defeat by Washington Redskins that made him miss the last three games. His 27:24 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers was particularly outstanding. Here he led the Raiders to a comeback victory with three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. That made him the first Raiders quarterback since Ken Stabler in 1979, who threw three touchdown passes in the final quarter. He was voted AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his achievements .

In the 2010 offseason he suffered a chest muscle injury while bench pressing, which necessitated surgery. He then missed much of the preseason and only returned to the third preseason game. After the Raiders sacked Russell in April 2010, they signed Jason Campbell as their starter. After this poor performance, he was replaced after two season games by Gradkowski as a starter. After an injury in the game against the Miami Dolphins on matchday 12, he was placed on the Injured Reserve List , which ended the 2010 season for him.

Cincinnati Bengals

On July 27, 2011, the Cincinnati Bengals signed Gradkowski for two years. There he was Andy Dalton's backup and played under offensive coordinator Jay Gruden along with his former roommate from Toledo, Andrew Hawkins . Already in the first game of the season in 2011 he came into play after an injury to Dalton and led the Bengals to victory after a 13:17 deficit. Later in the season he played the fourth quarter in the 7:35 loss to the Steelers. In 2012 he also played in two games. In the season finale, he temporarily replaced Dalton to spare him for the play-offs that were already secured. Overall, Gradkowski led the Bengals in twelve drives , with five touchdowns and no turnover .

Pittsburgh Steelers

In 2013 he went to his hometown for the Pittsburgh Steelers . In the first two Regular Seasons , he did not play a single game before he played for the Steelers in the playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens on January 3, 2015. Gradkowski spent the 2015 season on the Injured Reserve List after injuring himself in a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers . On May 2, 2016, the Steelers gave him a one-year contract. On August 31, 2016, he was placed on the Injured Reserve List by the Steelers after suffering an injury in the first preseason game, ending the season for him. He was released on October 8, 2016.
