The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (short for Bucs ) are an American football team of the National Football League (NFL). They play in Tampa and were founded in 1976. From 1976 to 1997, Houlihan's Stadium was used as the home stadium. The current home stadium is the Raymond James Stadium .
The tricot colors are red, tin ( " pewter "), black and white; also used to be orange. A pewter-colored helmet is used as a helmet, on which a torn flag hangs on a saber, on this flag a skull, two crossed sabers and a football are depicted.
The Buccaneers have won two Super Bowls so far : after the 2002 season against the Oakland Raiders ( Super Bowl XXXVII ) and after the 2020 season against the Kansas City Chiefs ( Super Bowl LV ). On the other hand, the Buccaneers have the worst win / lose ratio of any currently active NFL franchise.
The Buccaneers are owned by the Glazer family , who also own the Manchester United football club .
Team history
The Buccaneers, together with the Seattle Seahawks, expanded the NFL to 28 teams in 1976 . Both newcomers should be able to or must play against each other and against all other teams so that the competition is not distorted. The team from Florida was initially assigned to AFC West, which is based on the other end of the continent. After Seattle's victory in direct comparison, Tampa Bay's first season ended without a win (0:14), although their defensive line had a future Hall of Fame player with Lee Roy Selmon . In the next season as scheduled in the National Football Conference Central, the Buccaneers lost another twelve games before the first opponent could be beaten. Already in 1979, in the fourth year, they made it into the NFC Championship Game , which was lost without winning a point. The Bucs could not win a game until the last matchday in 2002, i.e. for 26 years, if the temperature was below 4 ° C (40 ° F ) at the beginning of the game . There was a similar streak of defeats from 1980 to 1995, when they failed to win a game played outdoors on artificial turf for 27 games . Playing away for an AFC team meant losing until December 26, 1993, or 20 games for a long time.
The team was used to losing. In 17 of their first 21 seasons they lost at least ten games, twelve of them in a row (1983 to 1994). Only once did the Buccaneers really show off, when they were stopped 9-0 by the Los Angeles Rams in the late 1970s in the NFC Championship Game (semifinals) . Because of their not exactly outstanding performance, the team logo was often mocked. Jokes about the Bucs were widespread.
In the mid-1990s, the Glazer family took over the Buccaneers business from Hugh Culverhouse . The Glazers pumped a lot of money into the team. Among other things, through the engagement of Tony Dungy , the Bucs finally became competitive. To put an end to the team's gritty history, the colors were changed from orange and white to buccaneer red, black and pewter.
As part of the league reform in 2002, Tampa Bay was assigned to the new NFC South. The other teams are the Atlanta Falcons , Carolina Panthers, and the New Orleans Saints . The Super Bowl balance is 2: 0 after the victories in Super Bowl XXXVII and Super Bowl LV . The record in the NFC Championship Game is 1: 2 by beating the Philadelphia Eagles on January 18, 2003 and losing to the Los Angeles Rams in 1979 and the St. Louis Rams (same team) in 1999.
2002 was the Buccaneers' most successful season, with their first Super Bowl victory in the end. The Buccaneers were the first team to win the Super Bowl and at the same time
- had no influence on the events of the first and second round of the NFL Draft in the previous spring (these rights were given in exchange with the Oakland Raiders, whereupon their trainer, Jon Gruden , moved to Florida),
- lost the home game on the first day of play (26:20 a.d. against New Orleans Saints ),
- ran less than 100 yards per game (97.3) and
- in the previous season the wild card game (preliminary round of the play-offs ) lost and thus eliminated there (9:31 at the Philadelphia Eagles ).
The year after that ended badly. With almost the same team that had previously been NFL champions, they now lost more games than they won (7: 9). Thus for the first time both teams of the final from the previous season could not move into the play-offs.
In 2004 the Buccaneers gave up three key players - John Lynch , Warren Sapp , Keyshawn Johnson - and their record compared to 2003 was even worse (5:11). They also went down in the annals of the league, because never before had a Super Bowl winner had a negative balance in the following two years.
In 2005 it was again possible to have a good season. Supported by Carnell "Cadillac" Williams , who was the fifth player selected in the draft and the first rookie to run more than 100 yards in his first three NFL games, eleven games were won and five lost. As a result, the Bucs won the NFC South. In the wild card play-offs, however, they lost to the Washington Redskins , who finished second in the NFC East, 10:17, although they were defeated 36:35 earlier in the same season.
The 2006 season was a continuation of the downward trend of previous years. Without real stars in the offense - apart from Joey Galloway - only four wins out of twelve defeats. That meant the last place in the division and once again a place in the top five in the following NFL draft. Another reason for the poor performance was the strong division NFC South, there were no wins and six losses.
In the 2007 season there was a positive turnaround due to a usual strong defense , but also a strengthened offense, led by quarterback Jeff Garcia . The Bucs won the weak NFC South and moved into the play-offs as number four in the NFC. In the wild card play-offs they lost at home to the New York Giants at 14:24. Noteworthy about the 2007 season was the first touchdown by a kickoff return in the history of the Buccaneers by Michael Spurlock in the game against the Atlanta Falcons .
After the Buccaneers could not improve in 2008 compared to last season and also missed the play-offs, almost all coaches were fired, including head coach Jon Gruden . Then Raheem Morris took over his position, who had been a coach for the Buccaneers for years.
2009 was all about rebuilding and, as expected, was bad. The next year, however, the Buccaneers played surprisingly well, and they mixed up for a wildcard until the final day of the game.
As a result of the disappointing 2011 season, in which they only won four games, the Buccaneers fired Raheem Morris and appointed Greg Schiano as their new head coach.
But even in the 2012 season Tampa Bay sank into mediocrity (7-9 wins, no play-offs), and 2013 was a bad year. After a promising transfer period in which three current all-pros ( Guard Carl Nicks , cornerback Darrelle Revis and Free Safety Dashon Goldson ) and the two-time Super Bowl winner kicker Lawrence Tynes were signed, Nicks, Tynes and an "unknown third party" got infected Player “with life-threatening multi - resistant staphylococci . Nicks survived the infection unscathed, but Tynes sustained permanent damage to his shooting foot and did not play a game. After eight consecutive defeats, the 2013 season ended with a 4-12 record. The following season in 2014 was even ended with a 2-14 record under the leadership of the newly signed Head Coach Lovie Smith . In the 2015 NFL Draft, the privilege of the first overall pick was used to fill the quarterback position with Jameis Winston . Winston played a decent rookie season and the team ended the season with six wins and ten defeats after occasional chances of moving into the play-offs. Despite the progress made compared to last year, Lovie Smith was surprisingly sacked after the final game.
In the five years with Winston as starting quarterback, the team did not make play-off participation. For the 2020 season , the Buccaneers were able to sign Tom Brady as their new quarterback, who left the New England Patriots after 20 years . Towards the end of April 2020 it was announced that the Buccaneers were able to reactivate a long-time teammate of Tom Brady from retirement in Rob Gronkowski . The two recently won Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta with the New England Patriots . With Tom Brady at the helm, the Bucs made it into the Wild Card Round, where they beat the Washington Football Team by 31:23. Afterwards they also won the Divisional Round with 30:20 against the New Orleans Saints . The subsequent NFC conference final, the team won 31:26 against the Green Bay Packers and thus moved into the Super Bowl. It was the first time in NFL history that a team played for the trophy in its own stadium. In the final of the Super Bowl, the Buccaneers were able to defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 31: 9, making them the first team ever to win the trophy in their home stadium.
