The 2018 NFL season was the 99th season in American football in the National Football League (NFL). The season began on September 6, 2018 with the regular season and ended on February 3, 2019 with the Super Bowl LIII at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta , Georgia . The champions became the New England Patriots .
Rule changes
At the meeting of the NFL club owners on March 27, 2018, new rules were adopted and existing ones extended:
- The rule extended in 2017 that the snap starts at the 25- yard line after a touchback has become a permanent rule.
- The definition of a catch has been revised and includes:
- Control of the ball
- Both feet or any other part of the body except the hands, have in bounds (in the field) be
- Execution of a "football move", ie a normal movement of the player such as a third step, the attempt to reach a new down or to fend off an opponent.
- The revision of the definition became necessary because decisions had been made in the past that caused great excitement and because even experts had to surrender when evaluating a rule-compliant catch. Two prominent and incomplete cases were the catch of Dez Bryant in the play-offs 2014 against the Green Bay Packers or the catch of the tight end Jesse James of the Pittsburgh Steelers against the New England Patriots in the 2017 season . According to the new rule, both cases are full passports.
- An official in front of a screen in New York (for the 2018 season: NFL Senior Vice President of Officiating Al Riveron ) may point out a flagrant foul to the official on the field of play . An ejection , i.e. exclusion of the player, can therefore take place during the game. With this, the league reacted to Rob Gronkowski's gross unsportsmanlike conduct against Tre'Davious White , for which Gronkowski was punished only after the game.
- The penalties for illegal batting and illegal kicking will be aligned and will be 10 yards each.
- If a team scores a field goal in extra time and then the other team fumbles the ball or loses it by interception , the game is played to the end and any points scored, e.g. B. Pick Six will also count.
- A team that scores a winning touchdown at the end of regular time no longer needs to perform the PAT or two-point conversion .
- In order to further reduce the incidence of concussions and their long-term effects as well as life-threatening injuries - as with Ryan Shazier - the targeting rule was introduced. In this case, not only a helmet-to-helmet hit , but every action in which a player with a lowered helmet hits an opponent results in a 15-yard penalty. In the case of a particularly serious offense, the player can also be excluded, which was previously not possible. This rule change was heavily criticized prior to the season, as this technique is considered a basic technique of the game. In retrospect, however, there were far fewer flags for the offense than feared, as only the most obvious violations were punished on the field and the players were only warned by the league afterwards.
- To further protect quarterbacks , the rule Roughing the Passer , which has existed since 1938, was tightened. Usually an "and" was replaced by an "or", which made it much more difficult for linebackers and defensive line players to sink the quarterback without punishment . One of the victims of the tightened rule was Clay Matthews , who received three such penalties in the first three games, whereas he had only received four of these penalties in the previous ten years. To avoid punishment, some defenders attempted to unroll after the tackle, with William Hayes tearing his cruciate ligament. After the first few games there was a more precise explanation of the rules, but the rule changed the game in such a way that players forego a safe sack or concentrate only on hitting the ball away.
In addition, new rules for the kick-off were adopted at the spring meeting of club owners on May 23, 2018 in order to reduce further injury risks. Since both teams collide with each other at the highest speed during the kickoff return, the tackles are particularly dangerous and quickly lead to head injuries. The following rule changes at the kickoff force the teams to tactically change:
- There must be five players on the kicking team on each side of the kicker . At least two players must stand between the touchline and the yard lettering on the field and at least two players must stand between the hash marks and the yard lettering.
- Apart from the kicker, the players on the kicking team may now be no more than one yard behind the ball when kicking.
- The wedge block , in which two players grapple with an opponent, is prohibited. However, players who stood in the setup zone during the kick may block an opponent in pairs, provided that this is not a wedge block. The setup zone is the area between the 45-yard line of the kicking team and the 40-yard line of the receiving team. At least eight players from the receiving team must be in this zone during the kick .
- As soon as the ball hits the grass in the end zone , it means a touchback. It is no longer necessary to secure the ball by a player "kneeling down".
During the meeting of the club owners, an anthem guideline for the coming season was decided on the topic of anthem protest . The new policy stipulated that players who want to protest had to stay in the dressing room until the end of the anthem. Penalties should apply to those teams who kneel down while playing the anthem. The guideline was adopted without the consent of the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), the NFL players' union, which is why they wanted to review the guideline and, if necessary, contest it shortly after it was published. Since the NFL and NFLPA could not agree on a common solution, the policy on the anthem protest was suspended for the time being.
During their fall meeting in October 2018, the owners decided to change the rules of ownership. This change came in response to the death of Seattle Seahawks owner Paul Allen . The change allows owners of one NFL team to own teams from other sports leagues when they play in another NFL team's market. This change affected, among other things, the owner of the Los Angeles Rams , Stan Kroenke . He also owns the NBA and NHL teams Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche , which are located in Denver, the market for the Denver Broncos . So far, Kroenke had circumvented the rule by relinquishing control of the two teams to family members when he acquired the Rams.
NFL draft
The 2018 draft took place in Arlington , Texas , April 26-28 . Since the Cleveland Browns had the worst season record in the past 2017 season, they had the right to select the first player in the draft. In the first round they chose quarterback Baker Mayfield of the Oklahoma Sooners of the University of Oklahoma .
Regular season
game schedule
The schedule was announced on April 19, 2018. The regular season began on September 6, 2018 with the reigning Super Bowl LII winner Philadelphia Eagles game against the Atlanta Falcons . It comprised 256 games over 17 game weeks, with each of the 32 teams playing 16 games and having a game-free week ( Bye Week ) between the fourth and the twelfth week. 17 games were played as a Monday Night Game . On the last weekend, all games took place on Sunday (January 30, 2018). There were 17 Thursday Night games , starting with the opening game on September 6th and games on Thanksgiving . In the games of the 17th week, all teams met - as has been the case since 2010 - against an opponent from their division.
Each team played against 13 other teams . It played twice against the three other teams from its division (six games together). In addition, each team played - on a rotation basis - against all four teams from a different division of its conference (four games in total). Another two games were played against the two remaining teams in the same conference, which ended in the same place as the opposing team in their division the previous season (if a team finished third, it would play against all three third-placed teams in its conference). The remaining four games were played in an inter-conference comparison. To this end, two divisions meet on a rotation basis. In the 2018 season, the schedule provided for the following distribution:
division | ||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Conference | AFC East | AFC North | AFC South | AFC West | NFC East | NFC North | NFC South | NFC West |
AFC | South | west | East | North | South | East | North | west |
NFC | North | South | East | west | South | west | East | North |
An example to explain the table: the four AFC East teams met the four AFC South teams and the four NFC North teams. |
Games in the NFL International Series
As in previous years, some regular season games took place as part of the NFL International Series - these were played outside the United States , three at Wembley Stadium in London , Great Britain. Originally one of them was supposed to be held in the new White Hart Lane , but this was not possible due to its delayed completion. In addition, as in previous years, a game was planned in the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City . Due to previous events (soccer games and concerts) and rain, the stadium lawn was in very poor condition, so the NFL decided to move the planned game (Chiefs vs. Rams) to Los Angeles due to the high risk of injury.

Postseason
Play-offs
The play-offs began on January 5, 2019 with the Wild Card Round and ended on February 3, 2019 with the Super Bowl LIII at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta . It was the third Super Bowl to be held in Atlanta after Super Bowl XXVIII of 1994 and Super Bowl XXXIV of 2000. In the game, the New England Patriots , winners of the AFC Championship Game , faced the Los Angeles Rams , winners of the NFC Championship Game . It was a remake of Super Bowl XXXVI from 2002, in which the highly favored Rams lost to the Patriots and their then young quarterback Tom Brady 20:17. For the Rams, who no longer played in St. Louis as in 2002, but in Los Angeles, it was the first Super Bowl since the last lost final in 2002.
The New England Patriots won the game 13: 3 and thus their sixth Super Bowl. The wide receiver Julian Edelman of the New England Patriots became the Super Bowl MVP elected. The game, in which for the first time in the history of Super Bowl no touchdown was scored before the fourth quarter, replaced Super Bowl VII , which ended 14: 7, as the game with the lowest points of all Super Bowls.
Maroon 5 and Big Boi as well as Travis Scott appeared in the half-time break after some possible artists canceled a performance in advance, as they criticized the behavior of the NFL around Colin Kaepernick and his protest and in turn expressed their criticism with their boycott of the show. The match was led by referee John Parry .
