The 1978 NFL season was the 59th season in American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 2, 1978 and ended on December 18, 1978. The season ended with the Pro Bowl on January 29 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles , California .

The regular season was extended to 16 games, in the play-offs the number of participating teams was increased from eight to ten. From each conference ( AFC and NFC ) one more team was determined by wild cards.

Due to changes in the rules, the passing game in particular was simplified and further injury risks eliminated.

The 13th Super Bowl took place on January 21, 1979 at the Miami Orange Bowl in Miami , Florida . In the finals, the Pittsburgh Steelers met the Dallas Cowboys , the Pittsburgh Steelers won their third Super Bowl .
