The 1942 NFL season was the 23rd regular season of the National Football League . Before the season, many players left the teams for service in World War II , which thinned their roster a lot.

The Chicago Bears finished the regular season with 11-0 and met in the Championship Game on the 10-1 standing Washington Redskins . Washington, who were beaten 0:73 by Chicago in the NFL Championship Game of 1940 , had destroyed the Bears' hopes for a perfect season with the 14: 6 victory .

Important rule changes

  • The use of flags on flexible poles to mark the intersection of the goal lines and sideline (predecessor of the pylons) became mandatory.
  • A clarification of the offside rule has been added: the center or long snapper is not offside unless part of his body is in front of the opponent's defensive line.
  • A half cannot end with a double foul. Instead, the half-time is extended by one play without a time limit.
  • Removable kicking tees are prohibited.
  • If an encroachment or false start causes the other team to be offside, only the offending foul will be penalized.
  • A forward pass that is first touched by an unauthorized pass catcher can be intercepted .
  • If the offensive team gets a pass obstruction in the opposing end zone , it is an automatic touchback .

NFL draft

The 1942 NFL Draft was held on December 22, 1941 at Chicago 's Palmer House Hotel . With the first pick , running back Bill Dudley of the University of Virginia was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers .
