The 1964 NFL season was the 45th season of the National Football League (NFL), which at the time, along with the American Football League (AFL), was the top football league in the United States . The regular season lasted from September 12th to December 13th.

NFL champions were the Cleveland Browns , who clearly defeated the Baltimore Colts 27-0 in the NFL Championship Game on December 27, 1964 .

The rule that has existed since 1957 that the home team wear the colored uniform and the away team wear the white uniform has been repealed. The home team was now free to choose which uniform to use.

In addition, the team size was increased from 37 to 40.

Regular season

In the west, the Baltimore Colts were already confirmed as the winners of the conference three game days before the end. In the east, the Browns led the conference from the start. However, after they lost on the penultimate day of play against their direct pursuer St. Louis Cardinals, they needed a win on the last day of play to just about prevail against the Cardinals in the end.
