The 1993 NFL season was the 74th season in American football in the National Football League (NFL). The regular season began on September 5, 1993 and ended on January 3, 1994.
It was the only season in which all NFL teams played their 16 games over 18 game days. The positive response to the introduction of the 17th matchday in 1990 , after which every team has one week off play per season, prompted the league to extend the season for another week. However, this innovation was reversed after this season after criticism from the teams who saw their rhythm as impaired.
On March 1, 1993 , the current free agent system was introduced into the league. One of the first to use the free agency and its freedoms to his advantage was defensive end Reggie White , arguably the best defensive player and most sought-after free agent at the time. The Packers brought him to Green Bay on April 6 with a $ 17 million contract over a period of four years.
The negotiated collective bargaining agreement ran until 2000. The contract included pension benefits, medical benefits and other post-career support totaling 1 billion dollars. This was the most valuable contract in professional sport to date. This ended the period without a contract since June 29, 1987.
The play-offs took place from January 8th to 30th, 1994. In the Super Bowl ( XXVIII ), the Dallas Cowboys won for the second time in a row against the Buffalo Bills . To date, it has never happened again that the same teams faced each other in two consecutive Super Bowls. In addition, the Cowboys succeeded as the only team so far to win the Super Bowl after losing the first two games of the season.
At the team owner meetings in October and November, the new expansion franchises for the Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars were awarded.
Rule changes
- The time limit in which the offense must perform the next snap has been reduced from 45 to 40 seconds.
- The rule “Ineligible Receiver Downfield” was introduced, in which a penalty is pronounced if an unauthorized pass recipient (members of the offensive line ) catches a pass beyond the line of scrimmage without having blocked an opponent at the time of the pass.
- The passer can throw the ball away without an offense player having a chance to catch the ball. He has to be out of pocket and the ball has to cross the line of scrimmage . Thus, for. B. the quarterback, who notices an incoming defender and sees no chance to serve a free pass recipient, prevent a sack by throwing the ball away . Previously, this action was punished as intentional grounding with a 10-yard penalty.
NFL draft
The 1993 NFL Draft took place April 25-26 at the Marriot Marquis in New York City . The draft ran over eight rounds in which 224 players were selected. Since the New England Patriots had the right to the first player selected in the draft, they selected with the first-round pick to quarterback Drew Bledsoe of Washington State University .
