The Silverdome was a multifunctional stadium in the US city of Pontiac , near Detroit , in the state of Michigan . The stadium, which was spanned with an air-supported roof until a storm in 2013 , was opened in 1975 after a two-year construction period. On December 3, 2017, its demolition for the purpose of demolition failed. The following day the demolition was successfully carried out.

history

The Silverdome from 1975 to 2001, the home ground of the NFL - American football teams Detroit Lions , 1978-1988 of the NBA - Basketball teams Detroit Pistons and 1983-1984 of the USFL -Footballteams Michigan Panthers . In 1982 the stadium hosted the NFL final ( Super Bowl XVI ).

Four games were played in the stadium during the 1994 World Cup . For this purpose, real turf was laid in the stadium for the first and only time, while otherwise only artificial turf was used. Furthermore, with the game USA against Switzerland (1: 1), a game of the soccer world championship was not played in the open air for the first time.

In addition, the stadium acted as the venue for concerts and other special events such as WWF Wrestlemania III on March 29, 1987, which attracted 93,173 spectators to the Silverdome, as well as a mass by Pope John Paul II on September 19, 1987 in front of 90,000 believers.

Elvis Presley gave a New Year's Eve concert here on December 31, 1975 in front of over 60,000 spectators.

For football games, the stadium's capacity was 80,311 seats. After the Detroit Lions moved to the new downtown Ford Field in 2002 and the associated loss of the main user, the stadium became increasingly orphaned. In March 2007 it was closed and was for sale.

In November 2009, the Dome and the 127 were Acre (51.4 hectare ) plot of land for 583,000 US dollars to the Triple Properties Investment Group auctioned. On April 17th, 2010 the Silverdome was reopened. The first event was a monster truck race.

On August 6, 2010, the soccer teams AC Milan and Panathinaikos Athens met for the Match of the Titans in the Silverdome. The game was intended to promote Detroit as a football location. The stadium owners aspired to bring a Major League Soccer (MLS) team to Detroit in the Silverdome. In June 2011 an application was made to the MLS. It was planned to convert it into a two-story football stadium with 30,000 seats. The roof with the system for ventilating the air-supported roof, should the high cost due to be removed, which, for a natural grass playing field daylight would have ensured. No events have taken place in the dome since 2011.

In December 2012 the roof of the Silverdome was damaged. The reason for this was the failure of two of the four ovens that heated the air in the roof so that no snow and ice could collect there. The resulting ice fell through the roof into the interior. The damage grew rapidly and, despite attempts to repair it, the situation continued to deteriorate. On January 3, 2013, the roof's ventilation system was shut down permanently to prevent further damage. Around two weeks later, a storm devastated the roof and parts of the interior such as the press stand.

Since 2014, parts from the stadium such as signs or seats have been offered for sale on the Internet. This allowed fans of the Detroit Lions to purchase their previous seat. At that time the Silverdome looked like a ruin . Shreds of the roof covering were scattered around the stadium, the boxes' facilities had been destroyed and rainwater stood on the lower levels of the stadium.

In October 2015 it was announced that the Silverdome would be demolished. The start of demolition work was planned for spring 2016. The owners believe that this will make the property more attractive for new settlements. A mix of housing , retail and light industry could develop on the site . In the context of the emissions scandal , Volkswagen used the parking lot as a parking space for several thousand vehicles that had been bought back and had not yet been retrofitted or scrapped. The owner was then sued by the city of Pontiac , which saw it as a violation of the law.

In 2017, demolition work on the stadium began inside. On December 3rd of that year the demolition was supposed to take place by means of a blast. Due to a fault in the wiring, around ten percent of the explosives did not ignite and the stadium stopped. When another attempt was made the following day, the demolition was successfully carried out with twice the amount of explosive material.
