The Sun Devil Stadium (full name: Frank Kush Field / Sun Devil Stadium ) is a college football - stadium on the campus of Arizona State University (ASU) in the American US city of Tempe in the state of Arizona . It is home to the home games of the Arizona State Sun Devils NCAA college football team , which plays in the Pacific-12 Conference . The stadium, which is over sixty years old, has been under renovation for US $ 307 million since 2014 . The work should be completed by June 2019. The facility currently has a spectator capacity of 53,599 visitors.

history

The Sun Devil Stadium opened in 1958. The original audience capacity was 30,450. First expansions in 1976 increased the capacity to 57,722 and in 1989 the highest capacity was finally reached. The first football game was played on October 4, 1958. Arizona State University beat West Texas State University 16:13.

In 1988, the St. Louis Cardinals NFL team moved to Arizona and played as the Phoenix Cardinals at Sun Devil Stadium (the team was renamed the Arizona Cardinals in 1994 ).

The record attendance for football games was set on November 9, 1996 with 74,963 viewers in the game for the title of the Pac-10 Conference. ASU won the game against Cal 35: 7 and received an invitation to the Rose Bowl with the Pac-10 title . On September 21, 1996, the stadium was renamed Sun Devil Stadium, Frank Kush Field in honor of football coach Frank Kush. In 2006, the Arizona Cardinals moved to the newly built University of Phoenix Stadium , which is located in Glendale .

Events

The Sun Devil Stadium was the venue for the Fiesta Bowl from 1971 to 2006 , with two national championship games after the 1998 and 2002 seasons. When the Fiesta Bowl moved to the nearby University of Phoenix Stadium in 2007, the Cheez-It Bowl (previously Copper Bowl, Insight Bowl, Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, Cactus Bowl) until 2015 at Sun Devil Stadium.

On December 13, 1981, The Rolling Stones performed at Sun Devil Stadium; the concert was sold out with 74,600 spectators. With the concerts on December 19 and 20, 1987, the Irish band U2 ended their Joshua Tree Tour there . Another time U2 appeared in this stadium as part of the Popmart Tour on May 9, 1997. Pope John Paul II visited Phoenix on September 14, 1987 on an overseas tour of the United States. He held a mass at Sun Devil Stadium with 75,000 in attendance. All Sun Devil logos and lettering on the stadium facade that contained the word Devil had to be covered beforehand.

In 1996, Super Bowl XXX took place at Sun Devil Stadium. The Dallas Cowboys beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27:17 and won the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the fifth time. The game took place in front of a record crowd of 76,347 spectators.
