‹ Super Bowl VII | Super Bowl IX › |
The Super Bowl VIII was the eighth Super Bowl of the National Football League (NFL). On January 13, 1974, the Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins faced each other at Rice Stadium in Houston , Texas . The Miami Dolphins won with a final score of 24: 7. Miami's running back Larry Csonka set two new Super Bowl records with the most touchdowns (two) and the most yards run per game (145) and was voted Super Bowl MVP .
background
For the Dolphins, Super Bowl VIII was the third Super Bowl in a row. It was the first Super Bowl that was played in a stadium not currently used by a team from the NFL or former AFL, the Rice Stadium was only used again in the 1960s for professional football in the National Football League. There was some controversy because of the poor training opportunities at the stadium for the Vikings, according to statements by Bud Grant , the team always had to travel 20 minutes by bus from the hotel, the changing rooms were too small and stuffy, there were no lockers and most of the showers didn't work. Furthermore, there was no football-specific equipment on the training field.
Course of the game
In the first quarter Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick each ran a touchdown for the Dolphins, in the second quarter a field goal from Garo Yepremian followed . In the second half of the game, both teams each made a touchdown, which resulted in the final score of 24: 7.
