The Super Bowl XXII was the 22nd Super Bowl , the final game of the 1987 season of the National Football League (NFL). On January 31, 1988, the Washington Redskins won the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the second time after Super Bowl XVII . For the Denver Broncos it was the second Super Bowl defeat in a row. For Super Bowl MVP was quarterback of the Redskins, Doug Williams , selected.

The 1987 NFL season had to be shortened to 15 games by a strike. The Washington Redskins finished the regular season with a record of 11-4 as champions of the NFC East and were seeded number three for the playoffs of the NFC . After victories against the Chicago Bears and the Minnesota Vikings , the team around quarterback Doug Williams was in the Super Bowl. Doug Williams was the first African American quarterback to lead his team to the Super Bowl. The Denver Broncos had a record of 10-4-1. So they were champions of the AFC West and were the best team in the AFC . The Houston Oilers and the Cleveland Browns were defeated in the two playoffs .

With Markus Koch in the Redskins defense, the first German outfield player to win a Super Bowl.

Course of the game

First halftime

The Denver Broncos were able to take a 10-point lead early in the first quarter with a touchdown from Ricky Nattiel after a 56 yard pass from John Elway , a subsequent extra point and a field goal. The Redskins only found their way into the game in the second quarter when Doug Williams was able to direct the Redskins' attacks again after an injury break. Williams get four touchdown passes. In addition, Timmy Smith was able to complete a 58 yard run with a touchdown.

Second halftime

In the second half, the Redskins limited themselves to defending their lead. In the last quarter they were able to score another touchdown to make it 42:10.
