‹  Super Bowl XXXIII Super Bowl XXXV  ›

The Super Bowl XXXIV was the 34th Super Bowl , the final game of the 1999 season of the National Football League (NFL) in American football . In the Georgia Dome of Atlanta , the National Football Conference (NFC) master , the St. Louis Rams , defeated the American Football Conference (AFC) master , the Tennessee Titans , 23:16 on January 30, 2000 . Super Bowl MVP became the Rams' quarterback , Kurt Warner . The game is known for its dramatic end, in the last play linebacker Mike Jones to wide receiver the Titans, Kevin Dyson , a yard in front of the end zone tackeln could and thus secured the victory for the Rams.

overview

The St. Louis Rams had won 13 of the 16 season games in the regular season. The showpiece of the team from Missouri was their strong offense (" The Greatest Show on Turf ") around quarterback Kurt Warner, the incumbent Most Valuable Player . Warner scored 4,353 yards and threw 41 touchdowns . He was mainly supported by running back Marshall Faulk , who recorded twelve touchdowns and 2,429 scrimmage yards of space. In the NFC playoffs, the Minnesota Vikings were defeated 49-37 and then the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 11-6.

The Tennessee Titans also won 13 games this season. Since the Jacksonville Jaguars had won one more game in their division , the Titans first had to go to the AFC wildcard match, where they narrowly defeated the Buffalo Bills with 22-16, and then one after the other the Indianapolis Colts with 19-16 and the Jaguars with 33-14 turned off. The team from Nashville was characterized by its tough defense around linebacker Eddie Robinson , which only allowed 5,056 yards of space and only 242 points for the opponent. The offense around quarterback Steve McNair and running back Eddie George was considered unspectacular, but effective.

Course of the game

In the first drive, Kurt Warner was able to lead the Rams to the opposing 17-yard line, but the field goal attempt by kicker Jeff Wilkins failed because Mike Horan, who was assigned as the ball holder, failed to snap . McNair then threw the Titans up to the 32-yard line, but Titans kicker Al Del Greco missed a field goal attempt from 47 yards. Half-time was dominated by both lines of defense: until the break, every (!) Attack series of the Titans was ended without a first down. The Rams came within the 30-yard line four times: a touchdown was not scored, but Wilkins scored three field goals at halftime of 9-0 . The Titans finished the first half with no points and only 89 yards of space.

In the second half Warner threw the first touchdown of the game to wide receiver Torry Holt , and after a successful point-after-touchdown (PAT) from Wilkins St. Louis led 16-0 . Tennessee quarterback McNair initiated a long drive to the 2-yard line, which running back Eddie George completed for a touchdown. Since the subsequent two-point conversion failed, the Rams were still leading with 16-6 . After the Rams couldn't manage a first down, McNair led a second long drive, which George completed again for the second touchdown: after a successful PAT from El Greco, the Titans were only three points ( 16-13 ) behind. After another drive, Del Greco was able to kick a field goal to equalize ( 16-16 ).

With 2:12 minutes remaining, Warner threw a long pass at wide receiver Isaac Bruce , who ran from 73 yards into the end zone: after a successful PAT from Wilkins, the score was 23-16 for St. Louis. After the kickoff, Tennessee got the football back at its own 12-yard line, and McNair led a drive that brought the Titans to the Rams' 10-yard line with six seconds to go. For the final move, McNair opted for a "sliver right", a throwing move in which Titans tight end Frank Wycheck blocked the way for his receiver Kevin Dyson . McNair's throw was successful, but Dyson was tackled by Rams linebacker Mike Jones just before the end zone . In the fall, Dyson tried to stretch his arm with the football into the end zone, but literally came a yard short ("one yard short"). Rams quarterback Warner was elected to the Super Bowl MVP .

Jones' tackle was voted "Second Greatest Super Bowl Moment of All Time" by ESPN and is considered one of the most dramatic sports moments ever in the US. Dyson later said that he had hoped to break Jones' tackle, but he "would have just done his job." ( When he (Jones) got his hands on me, I thought I was going to break the tackle ... But he got my foot, tripped me up and wrapped up nice. That's what he's supposed to do. That's his job. )
