Career

NFL

St. Louis Rams

After Holt played college football for North Carolina State University , he was selected in 1999 by the St. Louis Rams , in the first round as the 6th player, in the NFL Draft . He played there for the next nine years and formed together with Kurt Warner , Marshall Faulk and Isaac Bruce the offense that became known as the Greatest Show on Turf . In his first season, Holt won the Super Bowl with the Rams . There he set a rookie record for balls and yards trapped . In his sophomore year he led the entire NFL in receiving yards at 1635. He was called to the Pro Bowl for the first time after the season . The next year Holt made it again with the Rams in the Super Bowl XXXVI , but there they were defeated as favorites by the New England Patriots with 17:21. Holt was re-elected to the Pro Bowl. The 2003 season was Holt's statistically most successful season. He led the NFL both in receiving yards with 1697, as well as with receptions with 117. Torry Holt made it for the first time in the all-pro team of the NFL. For the next four years, Holt was called up to the Pro Bowl every year and managed at least 90 catches and 1,300 yards.

Jacksonville Jaguars

On 20 April 2009 Torry Holt signed a 20 million US dollar doped three-year contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars . He was able to catch a total of 51 passes, but for the first time in his career went without a touchdown in a season. On February 11, 2010, he was released from his contract.

New England Patriots

On April 20, 2010, the New England Patriots signed Torry Holt. He got a one-year contract worth up to $ 1.7 million. Due to a knee injury that would have put him out of action for the entire season, he was released on August 17, before the start of the 2010 season.

End of career

Holt ended his career as a member of the St. Louis Rams on a one-day contract on April 4, 2012. At that point, he was 10th in NFL history with passes trapped for 13,382 yards and 13th with 920 passes trapped.

Style of play

At the beginning of his career, Holt impressed with his speed, the so-called "deep speed". Especially on deep pass routes he was able to overrun his opponents and also gained a lot of space after the catch ("yards after catch"). In the course of his career, Holt became known for his precise pass routes. Deep routes inwards (Dig Route, Deep In) and outwards (Deep Out, Comeback, Post Corner) were among his specialties, as he was able to maintain his top speed from so-called "cuts" (change of direction while running), as well as losing one's opponent with "double moves". Its trademark was its enormous catch safety. He was considered the best catcher in the league during his playing days. Holt himself said in an interview that every day of training he catches over 200 balls from different positions from a "jug machine" (a ball throwing system operated by electricity) without letting you fall. No player in NFL history has caught more balls in a decade (2000–2009) than Holt. He was considered a very fair player who was voted Rams MVP multiple times by his St. Louis Rams teammates.
