LaDainian Tomlinson Tarshane (* 23. June 1979 in Rosebud , Texas ), nicknamed "LT", is a former American American football poker players in the position of running backs . He played in the National Football League (NFL) for eleven years , nine years for the San Diego Chargers and most recently two years for the New York Jets . On June 18, 2012, he announced the end of his career.

Career

High school

LaDainian Tomlinson played for Waco University High (Texas) and was already a successful player at the time. In his senior year in high school , he had 2,554 yards and 39 touchdowns and seven games with over 200 yards each.

college

Tomlinson attended Texas Christian University ( TCU ) in Fort Worth , Texas. During his first two years he had to share the playing time with older running backs and was therefore not very successful from a purely statistical point of view. However, his presence on TCU's offensive was an important factor in winning the 1998 Sun Bowl against the University of Southern California ( USC ). In his junior season (third year of college), he posted an NCAA record for most yards in a game with 406 against the University of Texas at El Paso . He finished the year with a total of 1,850 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns. Last year ( senior season ) at college he ran 2,158 yards and 22 touchdowns, making it the league leader that year. In 2000 Tomlinson came into the selection for the Heisman Trophy , but lost in the final to quarterback Chris Weinke . Overall, he took it in his college career to 5,263 yards in the running game , ranking sixth place on the NCAA history.

NFL

San Diego Chargers

In the 2001 NFL Draft , LaDainian Tomlinson was selected in the first round with the fifth pick by the San Diego Chargers . The Chargers actually had the first pick of the year, but they didn't want to draft quarterback Michael Vick , the highest-traded player that year, and had swapped positions with the Atlanta Falcons before the actual draft .

New York Jets

He was with the San Diego Chargers until the summer of 2010 and announced his move to the New York Jets in July . Like in San Diego, he wears jersey number 21.

Tomlinson was a running back in the Chargers' starting line-up from the first game and has been one of the league's most successful players ever since. He managed to score over 1,200 yards of rushing and over ten touchdowns each in his first five years . At the same time he is only the fifth running back in history who has managed to start his career with over 1,000 yards of rushing for consecutive years (alongside Barry Sanders , Curtis Martin , Corey Dillon and Eric Dickerson ). In the 2003 season he was the first player ever to achieve 1,000 rushing yards and 100 receptions (pass catches). On October 16, 2005 (against the Oakland Raiders ) he became only the seventh player in NFL history to run, catch and throw a touchdown in one game. On November 19, 2006 (against the Denver Broncos ) he reached in his 89th game as the fastest player the 100 touchdown mark (only run and caught touchdowns). On Monday February 15, 2010, the San Diego Chargers announced that LaDainian Tomlinson will no longer play for the Chargers. Tomlinson then signed a two-year $ 5.2 million deal with the New York Jets.

LaDainian Tomlinson played in five Pro Bowls (2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007) and was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Offensive Player of the Year in the 2006 season.

Play style

LaDainian Tomlinson was considered one of the most complete NFL running backs. He not only impressed with his willingness to run, but was also a very safe and dangerous passport recipient. He himself says his best ability is his field vision , the ability to see the field and the opposing players and to assess situations. One of his special moves, which he successfully used in high school and college, was his high and long jump over the offensive and defensive line on short moves in front of the opposing end zone. In addition, LaDainian Tomlinson repeatedly demonstrated talent in throwing the ball. Because of this characteristic, the San Diego Chargers under Head Coach Marty Schottenheimer have developed their own trick plays, the so-called halfback passes, through which Tomlinson threw seven touchdowns in his career (with no single interception ).

He attributes a large part of the success to his fullback Lorenzo Neal , who was the pre-blocker of the Chargers for years.
