Kellen Boswell Winslow (* 5. November 1957 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is a former American American football poker players. He played tight end in the National Football League (NFL) for the San Diego Chargers .

Player career

College career

Winslow played American football in high school in his hometown. There he was noticed by a trainer from the University of Missouri , who helped him to a scholarship and put him on the college football team . Winslow was one of the first tight ends to not only catch passes over a short distance, but was also responsible for catching the deep passes of a quarterback . In his first year (1975), Winslow received little time and was only used more and more from 1976. In 1978 he moved with his team to the Liberty Bowl , where Louisiana State University was defeated with 20:15.

Profile career

The tall Winslow was committed in 1979 in the NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers trained by Don Coryell in the first round in 13th place. After seven games in his rookie season, he had to sit out the rest of the round with a knee injury. From his sophomore year onwards, he received more and more time as a starter on his team and was repeatedly played by quarterback Dan Fouts , who would later become a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame . In 1980 and 1981 he caught 89 and 88 passports, respectively, which was an annual record for all pass recipients. In 1980 he was able to achieve a space gain of 1290 yards with his 89 pass catches. This was the NFL annual high for tight ends until 2011 (broken by Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham ). In 1981 he was able to catch five touchdown passes in one game during the regular season and thus set the record set up to date.

In the 1980 season , the Chargers managed to move into the play-offs . There they lost in the AFC Championship Game to the later Super Bowl winner, the Oakland Raiders , with 34:27. Winslow caught three passes for 42 yards. In the following season , they made it into the play-offs again. Also in 1981 they lost in the AFC Championship Game, this time the Cincinnati Bengals were able to prevail 27: 7 against the Chargers in one of the coldest NFL games of all time, the so-called Freezer Bowl . Also in this game, Winslow caught three passes from fouts, gaining 47 yards and a touchdown.

In 1984 he suffered another knee injury and was only able to play seven games. Due to the injury, he also missed the start of the 1985 season. In 1986 he was able to catch another 64 passes. A third knee injury in 1987 forced him to end his career early.

Honors

Winslow played five times in the Pro Bowl and was voted All-Pro four times . He is a member of the San Diego Chargers Hall of Fame , the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team , the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team , the College Football Hall of Fame (since 2002) and the Pro Football Hall of Fame since 1995 . In 1981 he was elected Pro Bowl MVP after the Pro Bowl . The Sporting News voted him one of the Top 100 Football Players of All Time.
