Keith Joseph Millard (* 18th March 1962 in Pleasanton , California ) is a former American American football poker players. He played as a defensive tackle and defensive end in the National Football League (NFL) with the Minnesota Vikings .

Player career

College career

Keith Millard attended high school in his hometown , where he played as a linebacker and tight end American football. From 1980 to 1983 he studied at the Washington State University where he played for the Washington State Cougars Football . Millard was used in his first year as a tight end in the offense of the team and then switched to defense and played there as a defensive tackle. In 1981 he played with his team at the Holiday Bowl . The game against Brigham Young University was lost 38:36. In his senior year at college, he was elected to the Pacific-10 Conference and voted the best defensive line player in the league. He has received three awards from college for his athletic achievements.

Professional career

Keith Millard was drafted 13th in the first round by the Minnesota Vikings in 1984 . The Arizona Wranglers from the United States Football League (USFL) were also interested in signing Millard. After he had contracted to the team from Arizona , he was given over by the Wranglers to the Jacksonville Bulls. In 1985 the USFL stopped playing and Millard moved to the Vikings, who were coached by Bud Grant , after only one year of play in the USFL . Millard ran for the Vikings together with Chris Doleman as a defensive end . In his first game year he succeeded the opposing quarterback eleven times behind the line of scrimmage to case to bring. In 1987 Millard was able to move into the NFC Championship Game with the team from Minnesota , where they were defeated by the Washington Redskins with 17:10. The following year, the Vikings failed in the playoffs at the San Francisco 49ers with 34: 9. In 1989 Millard was able to move into the finals for the third time with his team, but again he failed with the Vikings in the playoffs against the team from San Francisco . The game ended 41:13 for the 49ers. Despite this defeat, 1989 was his statistically best round for Millard. After moving to the position of defensive tackle prior to the season, he got 18 sacks this season. With that, he is still the record holder in this category today.

Millard had to skip the 1991 season due to an injury. He then moved to the Seattle Seahawks in 1992 and to the Green Bay Packers that same year . For both teams he only played twice in the NFL. After a final year playing with the Philadelphia Eagles , he ended his career after the 1993 season.

Coaching career

After his playing career, Millard was assistant coach of the football team at Fort Lewis College in 1996 . Until 2000 he was active as an assistant coach at Menlo College for three years before he switched back to the professional field. About the Los Angeles Dragons from the Spring Football League (SFL) he moved in 2001 to the XFL to the San Francisco Demons. From 2001 to 2004 he was assistant coach under Mike Shanahan at the Denver Broncos . In 2005 he was hired by Al Davis and worked for the Oakland Raiders from then on . After a year as an assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers , he joined the Tennessee Titans as assistant to head coach Mike Munchak prior to the 2012 season .

Honors

Keith Millard played twice in the Pro Bowl , the final game of the best players of the season. He was elected once to the All-USFL team and four times to the All-Pro in the NFL. He is a member of the NFL 1980s All-Decade Team and the USFL All-Time Team. After his personally most successful playing year in 1989, he was honored with the election of NFL Defensive Player of the Year . The Vikings have included him in their list of the 50 best players to ever play for the team.
