Michael Edward "Mike" Shanahan (born August 24, 1952 in Oak Park , Illinois ) is an American American football coach . Until the end of 2013 he was head coach of the Washington Redskins in the National Football League (NFL). He previously coached the Los Angeles Raiders and the Denver Broncos , with whom he won the Super Bowl ( Super Bowl XXXII and XXXIII ) in 1997 and 1998 .

Life

Shanahan successfully played college football for Eastern Illinois University . In one training session, he injured his kidney and suffered cardiac arrest. He had to end his playing career and switched to the coaching staff. After completing his studies, he worked at various universities until 1983, primarily as an offensive coordinator .

Coaching career in the NFL

Early stations

In 1984 he became part of the coaching staff around Dan Reeves at the Denver Broncos. In 1988 he became head coach for the first time in the NFL. The then Los Angeles Raiders fired Shanahan before the end of his second season. Then he was again offensive assistant with the Denver Broncos. In the increasing disputes between Head Coach Reeves and quarterback John Elway , he got between the fronts and had to leave the Broncos again in 1991.

San Francisco 49ers

Shanahan's most successful years as a coach began with his engagement with the San Francisco 49ers . As an offensive coordinator, he played a key role in winning Super Bowl XXIX , in which the 49ers beat the San Diego Chargers 49:26.

Denver Broncos

His success with the 49ers gave Shanahan a new chance as head coach in the NFL. In 1995 he took over an ambitious team with the Denver Broncos, which, however, has not yet won a Super Bowl and lost four finals between 1977 and 1989. In its third year with the Broncos, the team won the Super Bowl. In 1998 the title could even be defended. During his tenure, Shanahan repeatedly managed to find and promote talented running backs , even late in the NFL draft . His team's attacking game was based on a good running game . In the new millennium the successes failed and after three times in a row the play-offs were missed, Shanahan was fired on December 30, 2008. His record with the Broncos is 138 wins and 86 losses in the regular season and eight wins and five defeats in the play-offs. This makes him the most successful coach in the history of the Denver Broncos.

Washington Redskins

From January 5, 2010 to December 30, 2013, Mike Shanahan was Head Coach and Vice President of the Washington Redskins . His son Kyle was his offensive coordinator there.
