Assistant coach

Trainer

George Gerald Seifert (* 22. January 1940 in San Francisco , California ) is a former American American football trainer. Seifert was head coach of the San Francisco 49ers in the National Football League (NFL) for eight years and won the Super Bowl three times as assistant coach and twice as head coach with the 49ers .

Youth / college

George Seifert grew up in San Francisco, where he also attended high school. Already in his youth he was a fan of the San Francisco 49ers and worked during the games of the 49ers as an usher in their venue, the Kezar Stadium . From 1958 to 1961 he studied at the University of Utah , where he played under Head Coach Ray Nagel for the Utah Utes as linebacker and guard college football . At times he played together with the later member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Larry Wilson .

Coaching career

College coach

In 1964 Seifert returned to the University of Utah as an assistant coach, but moved to Westminister College as head coach the following year . The season at this college was unsuccessful for him and he then joined the University of Iowa as an assistant coach , which he left a year later and hired at the University of Oregon . From 1972 to 1974 he was an assistant at Stanford University . In 1975 and 1976 he unsuccessfully coached the Cornell University team and then returned to Stanford University, where he supported Bill Walsh . Walsh was a supporter of the West Coast Offense . This attack variant, originally from college football and introduced into the professional field by Sid Gillman, is based on pulling apart the opposing defense with short, fast passing plays in order to create gaps for the running game or for long passes . Seifert remained loyal to the West Coast offense until the end of his career.

Joe Montana, 2006

The Stanford Cardinals , based in the Pacific-8 Conference, were a successful team under the leadership of Walsh. They won nine out of twelve games in 1977. In the following Sun Bowl , the Cardinal won 24:14 against Louisiana State University . In the following year, the Cardinals remained successful, winning eight of twelve games in the regular season and defeating the University of Georgia team 25:22 in the Bluebonnet Bowl . Walsh then moved to the San Francisco 49ers, Seifert followed him a year later.

Jerry Rice, 2006
Ronnie Lott, 2006
Roger Craig, 2009

Assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers

In the years before Walsh took over the position of head coach, the 49ers were an unsuccessful team. This should not change at first under Bill Walsh. Walsh needed support and held Seifert for the right person first the backcourt defense of the team back on track due. Walsh himself managed to introduce the West Coast Offense in San Francisco, where he was able to tie suitable players such as quarterback Joe Montana , running back Roger Craig or wide receivers Jerry Rice and Dwight Clark to the team. Defense was also significantly strengthened with players like cornerback Ronnie Lott .

The first success came in 1981 . After the 49ers won 13 of 16 games in the regular season, they played in the NFC Championship Game against the Dallas Cowboys trained by Tom Landry . Her 28:27 win brought her entry into the Super Bowl . Opponents in Super Bowl XVI were the Cincinnati Bengals , who could be defeated with 26:21. The backcourt defense had managed to intercept two passes from quarterback Ken Anderson in the game . It was so crucial to the victory of the 49ers.

The 1984 season was also extremely successful for the 49ers. Seifert was now responsible for the entire defense as a defensive coordinator . In the NFC Championship Game, the 49ers faced the Chicago Bears . Seifert's defense worked brilliantly. A total of nine times the opposing quarterback behind was scrimmage to case brought and a pass was intercepted. The game ended 23-0 for Seifert's team. This allowed George Seifert to move into his second Super Bowl, which ended with a 38:16 victory over the Miami Dolphins . Seifert's defense also impressed in this final. Two passes from quarterback Dan Marino were intercepted, four times he was tackled behind the line of scrimmage .

After the final, the 49ers remained a top team in the NFL, but it wasn't until 1988 that Seifert won his next title. The team won ten of 16 games in the regular season and met the Chicago Bears again in the NFC Championship Game. The Bears had to admit defeat 28: 3, with Seifert's defense only allowing the Bears a gain of space of 267 yards , compared to 406 yards of space gained by their own offense . In Super Bowl XXIII , the 49ers faced the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals were able to keep the game evenly for a long time, but ultimately left the field with a 20:16 defeat. The defense again played a decisive role in the victory. The Bengals only gained 229 yards of space, while the 49ers earned 452 yards.

Bill Walsh resigned after winning Super Bowl XXIII and left the post of head coach to his previous assistant George Seifert.

Head Coach for the San Francisco 49ers

Seifert continued the West Coast Offense with the 49ers. Among other things, he managed to shape the former reserve player Brent Jones into a top player in the position of tight end over the next few years . Steve Young ran three times as a starting quarterback in 1989 , but was initially unable to displace Joe Montana as a regular player.

Seifert won his fourth Super Bowl in his rookie coaching year. The Bay Area team won 14 of 16 games in 1989 and faced the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship Game . The game was one-sided, Montana made two touchdown passes, the defense intercepted three passes and held the Rams offense with a gain of 156 yards. This was offset by 442 yards of space gained by the 49ers. Ultimately, they left the field with a 30-3 win. The Super Bowl XXIV ran no less one-sided. In their 55:10 defeat, the Denver Broncos never had a real opportunity to make the game victorious. Montana threw five touchdown passes, three to Jerry Rice and one to Brent Jones. Two passes from quarterback John Elway could be caught by his own defenders, who also had to hit the ground six times behind the target line.

Mike Shanahan, 2011

In the 1990 season , the 49ers again won fourteen games in the regular season and were considered favorites for the title. However, they lost the NFC Championship Game 15:13 against the New York Giants . In 1991 there was a change. Montana couldn't play due to injury and was replaced by Steve Young and Steve Bono . Seifert could not qualify for the play-offs with his team . The 1992 season went much better again. Before the game year Mike Shanahan had been signed as offensive coordinator . After another 14 wins in 16 games, the 49ers lost 30:20 to the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game . Seifert failed at the Cowboys in the following year with 38:21. In 1994 Seifert finally won his fifth and final Super Bowl. After 13 wins in 16 games, his team faced the Dallas Cowboys again in the NFC Championship Game, but this time they had to leave the field as losers with 38:28. Troy Aikman , the Cowboys quarterback, was knocked down four times behind the target line and threw three interceptions . Steve Young make two touchdown passes to Ricky Watters and Jerry Rice. The San Diego Chargers faced the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX . Young showed a first-class performance, threw six touchdown passes and led his team to a 49:26 victory.

Seifert successfully trained the 49ers for another two years. After the 1996 season he gave the office to Steve Mariucci .

Head Coach for the Carolina Panthers

In 1999 Seifert returned to the NFL as head coach and was in charge of the Carolina Panthers until 2001 . His last season with the Charlotte , North Carolina team was bad. He only managed one victory. He was released after the season.

Honors

George Seifert was after his career in the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame and the Hall of Fame included the San Francisco 49ers.
