life and career

After a playing career in the NFL and some engagements as an assistant coach in college football , Shula was first head coach of the Baltimore Colts in 1963 . The team was very successful under Shula and reached the Super Bowl at the end of the 1968 season . The Super Bowl III was lost to the New York Jets and their quarterback Joe Namath 7:16.

Shula joined the Miami Dolphins in 1970 , with whom he won the Super Bowl twice ( Super Bowl VII and Super Bowl VIII ). He also remained undefeated with the team in 1972, a unique achievement in the history of the NFL. He remained head coach of the Dolphins until 1995, where he ended his coaching career after a total of 33 seasons as an NFL coach.

Shula holds the NFL coaching record with 347 wins. In 1993 he was by the magazine Sports Illustrated for Athlete of the Year chosen.

Don Shula ran a steak house chain with his son Dave (who is also a former NFL coach).
